It's definitely I-90 from earlier in the thread. 3000 miles approximately.

it just said longest dual carriageway - how is that defined?Sunil_of_Yoxley wrote:It's definitely I-90 from earlier in the thread. 3000 miles approximately.
- longest continuous length of road without meeting oncoming traffic in the other direction the other side of some barrier (either a wide gap or a physical barrier like a kerb)?
- longest road with one number that isn't single carriageway?
My Quebec - Baja California beats I-90 if the first criteria is used, as would a Keys - Vancover route using the other diagonal. Also, why would I-95 not count (other than it's length) - the gap in New Jersey is easily fixed by taking the NJTP instead. I-95 might be missing a bit, but you can still go from one end to another (and further, using US 1 (non-freeway) from the end of I-95 to the bridge to the Keys) without using a single carriageway.

Yes I keep on forgetting! Sorry! I assume I-90 has no Totsos?
I guess the UK equivalent would be the M6/M6 Toll/M6/A74/A74(M)/M74 combo.
Including Totsos, then this would be A38*/M5/M6 then as above then M73/A80/M80/M9/A9.
* or is it now A30?
I'm not too familiar with the Interstate network, so how many Totsos would be involved.

infinite mileage there!
C, E flat and G go into a bar. The barman says "sorry, we don't serve minors". So E flat walks off, leaving C and G to share an open fifth between them.

Re: Longest dual carriageway in the world
But it does raise the question about what is meant by 'longest'
Furthest you can get as the crow flies from your original location ?
Longest distance you can travel without repeating yourself ?
I'd say the former is more 'worthy' but this has not been stated.

Is it meant to be freeflow? If so, you'll only get to Dundee.Ruperts Trooper wrote:Surely M73/A80/M80/M9/A90/A956 to Torry in Aberdeen ?

You could of course go M80, M876, M9, M90, A90 to Dundee.

Re:
There is indeed a gap in New Jersey, conveniently situated directly between me and my mother's house. Every time I go I have to decide which thirty miles of non-freeway I feel like using that time. (I could use the New Jersey Turnpike but my mother's far enough west that it's actually a bit out of the way.)multiraider2 wrote:Just off the top of my head and as an opening gambit: I-95 which runs down the entire eastern seaboard of the USA and is I believe 1,894.04 miles in total.
However, this is bound to be wrong and just doing some basic research, is there a gap in New Jersey? However, even if the number isn't continuous, the dual carriageway surely is.
Failing this and if different route numbers can be used, you must be able to get a DC route from the furthest South West USA to North East USA or from Homestead, Florida (South East) to Vancouver, Canada say and even if you can't (because a border crossing won't count) to somewhere else in NW USA.
But even without the gap, I wouldn't assume a thousand-mile Interstate has a thousand-mile central reservation. It might, on an older urban stretch or a bridge, become a concrete barrier, and there are bridges on the Interstate system with no reservation at all (so that they can adjust the number of lanes heading each direction at rush hours. A bunch of bridges in the Philadelphia area have this sort of thing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/triborough/493207870/

I just noticed I'd replied to a 2006 post....Tinpusher wrote:Good Lord, this thread has emerged from the crypt, all tattered mouldy funeral suit and skeletal remains.
(But while we're at it, there are TOTSO's on I-90 in Cleveland. Including the infamous "Dead Man's Curve." Which is thus on topic to this post.)
