Also opened at the same time, I think, was M6 J5-J7. If I remember correctly it would have opened considerably earlier but for doubts about some of the structures at J6.

This was seen at the time as the completion of the M6, though we are now getting Carlisle to Guards Mill.

The last previous section of the M6 to open, before J5-J7, was Penrith-Carlisle (J41-42) in 1971.

I've checked my Bartholomew atlas and it appears that 1975 was the start of the Dunkirk bypass. Maybe something fishy is going on.

20 March 1973, the A35/A338 Bournemouth town-centre by-pass, between Richmond Hill (A347 turning) and Westbourne (County Gates gyratory).

The continuation of this dual carriageway, northeastwards towards the Spur Road (A338 to Ringwood) followed a few years later.

Those don't look right to me (apart from the fact that it's not clear what stretch you mean by "Cumberland Gap to Metal Bridge" - surely Metal Bridge was part of the Cumberland Gap).

I think Mossband railway viaduct (now recently demolished 2008-9) was 1964.
I think from Carlisle to Mossband (including the river crossing at Metal Bridge) was 1970, simultaneously with the M6 Carlisle bypass.
I think the Gretna bypasses (A74 and A75) were 1973.

1975, A591 Kendal- M6 link
1976, A66 Brough by pass
A66 Keswick by pass
1977, A66 Bassenthwaite dualling
A66 Bridgefoot- Brigham- Cockermouth- Embleton by pass.
Not sure about the A roads but the M6 dates are wrong. Lancaster to Thrimby (the second and more southerly of two temporary junctions south of Penrith) was in 1970, making the M6 continuous from the midlands to J41.
The M6 Carlisle bypass was also 1970.
Penrith-Carlisle was 1971.

This appears to have been actually the date from Ballieston (A8) to Mollinsburn(A80).

Maryville (M74) to Baillieston was actually 11 May 1971.

I have just found a Esso Road Map Northern England dated 1970

It has the M63 from the Junction 1 at the A56 near Urmston/Stretford to the A56 at Prestwich though seems to end at Bury New Road. The numbering changes M63 to M62 around Eccles / Worsley. The M62 continuing East is shown as opening Spring 1971.

The M61 is shown dashed with no date.

The A666(M) to Kearsley looks as if it might be open but the big Kearsley Spaghetti Junction is shown opening end 1970

The larger map shows the M61 from Lostock Northwards

The M6 ends at Penrith

The M1 ends at J43

M62 dashed as far as J42

M56 dashed around Altrincham from A560 to A56

Also found another map - Dunlop Motoring Around Manchester but I can't find a date on that though it is pre-decimalisation

The only motorway, apart from the M6, is the M62 from A56 Stretford to A572 at Worsley - not shown as M62 all the way.

M61 shown dashed past Horwich i.e. Projected Motorway. Similarly the M62 past Rochdale.

Circa 1976-77: Hexham & Corbridge By-Pass
Hi Alex, A69 Corbridge- Hexham by pass opened in 1977, a year after the Throckley- Heddon- Horsley by pass. This was the first major upgrade to the A69, which also saw the road diverted through Scotswood and onto the Gateshead by pass, ending at Birtley.

M5 J17-18 Cribbs - Avonmouth, Thur Aug 28 1969
M5 J23-24 Bridgwater bypass, Tues Dec 18 1973
M5 J28-30 Cullompton- Exeter, Thur Oct 16 1975 10am
M5 Willand-J27 northbound, Tues July 6 1976 6am
M5 J27-Willand southbound, Thur July 8 1976 4pm
M5 J26-27 Wellington bypass, Thur Oct 21 1976
M5 J30-31 Exeter - A38/A30 Fri May 27 1977

The 1969 Cullompton bypass split the opening of the M5 from J27 to J30. The Willand rbt had to be replaced by a plain bridge, which meant seperate c/way openings and a contraflow at the end of the bypass.

A30 Peamore, Exeter bypass - Alphington A377, Oct 1975
A30 Alphington-Pocombe, temp S2 link to A30, Sun Nov 28 1975
A30 M5 J31 - A30 Peamore, Fri May 27 1977
A38 M5 J31 - A38 Kennford bypass Fri May 27 1977
Job done.

January 1976, Newcastle Central Motorway. This was part of a massive programme of road improvements in the mid seventies in Newcastle and Gateshead that saw the A69 Gateshead western by pass, linking the A1 with the A69 without the need to go into Central Newcastle, a new A692 through Dunston, and the A69 Throckley by pass. However, a bold scheme to build a motorway through Jesmond Dene was rejected on environmental grounds.
