A1 Newcastle Western Bypass completely opened in 1990. It opened in two sections; from the northenmost junction (B1318 nr Wide Open) down to A696 came first. Then the rest (from A696, south over the Tyne, joining on near today's A695 junction).

I can't remember for sure if the first section opened in 1989 or 1990. The second bit was definitely 1990.

It was much later than that. When I did work experience in 1992 I worked for the council putting plants in roundabouts and one of the locations I did was Carters Green when the original roundabouts were still there. I took this picture in c1995 of the roundabout near Staples which shows construction far from finished. I believe it was opened in 1996.

Guessing that you are on about the M1 extension at Leeds, it opened in 1999. (Have a look at any Motorway Database page for opening dates.)

Before it opened the M1 went into central Leeds, terminating at what is now M621 J3. It didn't end on the M621 as such; there wasn't full access between the two motorways. They just both terminated at the same point and dumped all their traffic onto Dewsbury Road.
Ah yes! J3... well that proves my thoughts then...
Whenever i am on the westbound M621 i get 2 j3 and traffic on the M621 ends up merging with traffic from the dewsbury road, so I had been thinking if the section from the dewsbury road was newer, and never used to be there.... and it seems my thoughts were right!
I thought that bit of the M1 was opened in 1998, maybe September...

Also from the 90's

A1079 Market Weighton bypass 1991
A165 Leven bypass 1995?
A19 Easingwold bypass 1995?
A1033 Northernmost bit 1997?
A1033 Hedon bypass 1991?
A164 link to Humber Bridge 1991?
My old posts are just downright embarrassing.

More Cumbrian road projects from the nineties:
1991 A595 Hensingham by pass opened( half a mile from me and removed a notorious bottleneck), Cockermouth western by pass
A69 Brampton by pass
1993 A595 Dalton in Furness- Barrow western by pass, A596 Wigton by pass
1994 As part of the A689 project, Crosby on Eden by passed
A66 South Stainmore by pass
Projects that were shelved, A595 Whitehaven by pass( never got off the drawing board), A595 Distington- Howgate by pass( finally started in 2006).
The Duddon Bridge( mentioned in 1992 on several occasions, but came to nothing).

Just been given an AA hardback map of 1992.

A14 between Catthorpe and Brampton Hut
A604 from Brampton Hut to Girton (as current A14), and from the A11 near Sawston to Colchester
A45 from Girton to Felixstowe (as current A14 including S2 section past Dock Spur rbt)
A section of the M3 is also missing between J10 and J11

The A1(M) at Brampton did not exist back then, neither did much of the now A1(M) near Doncaster - the only blue line to appear on the A1(M) on that page is between the A614 merge and the A638.

M1 appears to run directly into the western end of the M621, with which junctions appear to be numbered 44, 45, 46, 47, 3, 2, 1. In fact I'm sure I remember seeing temporary blue signs mounted on the M621 which had a red strike through replacing M621 J4 with M1 J47. I was quite young at the time and memories of that visit to Yorkshire are a little hazy to say the least.

Hope this little lot helps.

My local one: the A921 Hillend Bypass opened in 1992 (but had been called for since at least 1973). One of the standard landmarks of my childhood was the "Hillend needs a bypass now" sign by the A921 / B916 junction

The section that runs parallel to the M6 was previously unclassified, but the section that runs parallel to the A69 was B6264. The upgrade included the construction of the Crosby-on-Eden bypass.

G'day guys, some very interesting 'old' road mps on this site, also I note the maps and atlases you acquire, where do you get them from? Relatives, friends, junkshops, interesting.

What is the oldest UK road map around? 1923 is the oldest one I have seen on this site's collection.

1922-23 is when the roads were first numbered, so you won't find any older than that containing numbers! There are, of course, many maps older than this - as an example I have a reproduction of a 1750 (and an 1821) map of Wolverhampton hanging in my bedroom.

There's loads on ebay if you look, and charity shops also often have a few old maps for sale.
