Botched Roadsigns

Post by Haydn1971 »

End plates sized are determined by the 85th %ile, it's a really slow turn into the side road there, but there is a ahead bus only at that point which should have made the end plate bigger than 50mm x'ht

Chevrons are prescribed in three heights, 400, 600 & 800mm, generally you shouldn't need anything more than a 400mm high one in urban streets.
Regards, Haydn

Here just a more random sign, a pair of "other warning" signs which appeared on the A87 last week.
...Best supplementary plate ever?

Is it specifically a warning to traffic or just generally? :!:

No, I forgot to put File: in the link - too used to copying that bit for internal links. :P

I drove the A87 a week ago last Friday (2nd of March). Looks like I was too early to see this.

I was driving to the SECC in Glasgow last night to take my daughter and her pals to a concert.
Check road atlas in advance - leave M8 junction 19. This is confirmed by the brown tourist destination sign after Baillieston on M8 - SECC junction 19.
With lots of traffic, junctions coming thick and fast, right hand exits etc a junction number would have helped.

PS I only drive on unfamiliar UK motorways maybe once or twice a year. I find the Glasgow style of gantries far more intuitive in traffic at speed - the 'official' style might look more logical on paper but at speed to me they are just a confused mess.

The sign you link to is actually correct according to the official style, as it's a true lane drop. Yes, it should have a junction number, and that's irrespective of whether it's in Glasgow's house style or is TSRGD compliant.

Although that's the first sign for the junction it's not a full gantry, it's a just squeezed on to the available apace on the structure. And there is a gantry with full junction destinations and number after the tunnel which still allows enough time to get into to the left lane.

By the time the gantry with junction number was visible the main line was still going at 50+ but the queue in the exit lane was crawling at walking pace. In these circumstances there is NOT enough time to safely get into the exit lane.

It still gives more warning than the "15.1" exit which appears a few meters after the first gantry which mentions it.

Problem in the area is a lack of space with the junctions so close together - I don;t think any style of gantry could cope in such circumstances.

What they really need is a supplementary sign to warn that the junctions are so close: somethin like this. Though given the width and layout of the M8 there will always be visibility issues.
