Glasgow concrete street lights

Post by Glenn A »

This style of concrete column and lantern was once common in south Glasgow on council housing schemes built in the 1950s and 1960s and seems to have lasted until 2017 in Priesthill. Not sure if this street of vintage street lights still exists as the area was to be redeveloped, but nice to see a style of street lighting that lasted such a long time and which would have been almost extinct in England by then.

Doing some research into this area and this is from the 1980s and more of the same street light design.

Just bumping the thread, there were several large concrete street lights in Eskbank St, Carntyne up until recently. Now been fitted with modern brackets (rather haphazardly?) onto the original concrete column.

Also several smaller examples around Avenue End Road, Ruchazie https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8737067 ... ?entry=ttu

And many still intact in Pollokshields, as mentioned in previous posts, complete with a variety of much older SOX lamps :) https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8418749 ... ?entry=ttu

There were quite a few concrete street lights in the council estates in Aberdeen, but I think most if not all of them have been replaced with new modern columns and LED lamps over the past 5 years or so.

There are at least two on the old alignment of the B766 at the Carmunnock Bypass.

That's an unusual sight these days, a GEC Z5590 with a clear bowl. I assume the lamp isn't mercury.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?
Big and complex.

Not been there at night, but I doubt it still works. The other one has been broken.
