hello fellow sabristi

it's an honour to be able count myself among your ranks

anyway on to the topic...

each time I travel southbound on the M1 from J23 out of Loughborough, once I have joined the motorway I soon come across what seems to be the beginnings of a junction that was never built:

the hard shoulder widens with tarmac which looks like the end of an on-slip, with it becoming what looks like a lane wide and carries on for about 1/4 mile where it apparently has part of an off-slip ending in the verge.

there is also a black and white chevron sign on what would be the centre of the off-slip telling us we need to stay to the right, to keep people on the hard shoulder

now, having noticed this around 4 times in the last year I keep meaning to research it however I keep drawing a blank and to cap it off when I use GSV I am unable to actually find anything that looks like what I'm sure I have seen when on that stretch

Can someone help and reassure me I'm not having hallucinations every time I'm s/b on the M1??

thanks and apologies on the length of my sentences!

james

They're ghost slips for the never-built Long Whatton services.

There are lots of similar ones around the motorway network.

Welcome to SABRE.

You need to be looking north of J23 rather than south, the unbuilt MSA is here: http://goo.gl/maps/iFXP

For more information, search on here for terms like Unbuilt MSA, ghost slips, unbuilt motorway services etc.

There are many other examples around, the one that springs to mind for me is east of junction 19 on the M4.
