Old alignments brought back into use

Post by novaecosse »

Network Rail are planning to replace a bridge on the East Coast Mainline over the Elliot Water on the A92 west of Arbroath
In order to site a huge crane (and it's a big un), they need to close the A92 for a few days over the Christmas weekend.

The intention is to temporarily reconnect the old A92 and utilise the old alignment.

Any other examples where an old section of road has been recommissioned?

This section of the old Shore Road, Newtownabbey was properly connected to the new Shore Road dual carraigeway (where previously a dirt track had connected the two) to allow access to a small development of new houses.

On the Queens Island Titanic Quarter, this old abandoned shipyard road behind the gate was recommissioned as a diversion route when HBO are using the paint hall to film Game of Thrones, and they don't want the traffic noise.

The A5 in North Wales springs to mind when the Ty Nant cutting had a landslip.

A section of Glasgow-bound A721 (ex-A74, or current A74 according to many maps) here was closed from the original opening of the M74 in 1968 until the northward extension circa 1995.

For over 20 years Glasgow-bound A74/A721 traffic crossed over the then end of the motorway on a now-removed loop slip road including a now-demolished bridge.

Edge Lane, Stretford (then a B road, now A5145) here was diverted southward as part of a 1960s junction improvement with the A56, then diverted back to something more like its original line when Kingsway and Stretford Mall were built.

Re the closing of the current A92 for the short stretch to allow the rail bridge replacement do they think they will realy manage it over two days?? Must pop down and take some pics.If they hadnt left the old route it would have meant a long diversion probably from Ardestie Junction following the lozenges.
Motorways travelled 2019 - M90 - M9 - M80 - M8 -M77 - M73 -A74(M) -M6-M42-M40 -A404(M) - M4 - M5 -M50 -M56 much better so far than last year

The Bingham one over the new A46 took 2 days to install, although the line was closed for 84 hours...

This temporary tie-in on the A428 severed the old road until the dual carriageway was extended further east. Now the old road is as it was before the dual carriageway was built.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Part of the old A57 was used during construction of the A1 junction at Markham Moor.

Will try to get down today if not tomorrow and get some more pics - I would have thought the lift of the old rail bridge would be in daylight today but no doubt the local paper will get a pic if I cant sneak out

It's been pretty windy in Dundee today, high wind warning has been posted on M90 Friarton, so reckoning as Arbroath is more exposed, might not have been much in the way of lifting going on today.
They have a load of towerlights set up all around the site.

Passed this morning but couldnt stop - crane gone - just excavators working alonside the track - cant really see what has been done - they still have another crane erected at Stannergate Circle Dundee where another bridge accessing the harbour over the railway was demolished over the last two days to allow a new replacement to be built - no access for pics but the crane was still in place at 4.30pm today.
