This has probably been posted before....but out of pure interest on my part. :)
but it is a legitimate question...

What is the largest settlement/village/small town by population size that is NOT served by ANY "A" or "B" roads whatsoever.

In other words, only C class roads....has anyone got any suggestions???

How about Wardle, between Rochdale and Littleborough? http://g.co/maps/uye65

and with nearly 27 times Lindisfarne's 161 is Bransgore on the western edge of the New Forest with a 2001 population of 4,333.

Castle Donington is a strong contender.

7000 - certainly up there.

Just remember New Addington, which at 21,527 looks unbeatable, unless the A2022 counts. However, West Chiltington Common looks rather large.

It looks like the A2022 is outside of the actual built-up area - using Google Maps, there are some properties around the A2022 just north of New Addington, but these don't include New Addington in the postal address... so this could be a winner.

Population 3315 according to Wikipedia.

However, any settlement population could be threatened by the Northstowe town development in Cambridgeshire. At the moment, it looks like its could be built away from any classified road and is proposed to feature 10,000 properties. However, its completion is expected to be 20-25 years away!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wardle,_G ... Manchester says population 7092, so most of these settlements are around the same size.

An A or B road - how about Wythenshawe?

The A560 skirts around the north of the 'town' (pop. 66,000), but the only way in or out is via the M56.

Wythenshawe has the A560 - although it skirts round the top end, it passes through what is classed as Wythenshawe by the council. The same could be said about the B5166 skirting along the eastern edge.

The reason for me saying so is because Wythenshawe is formed of nine districts, with none called Wythenshawe itself. Otherwise, that would have been my choice!

Codsall in Staffordshire had 11,296 inhabitants in 2001 : http://www.citypopulation.de/php/uk-eng ... yid=g90600 It doesn't beat New Addington, but it's the best of the rest so far if you discount Wythenshawe, which I would.

And the road from the A50 to Castle Donnington is well above the standard of most 'B' and many 'A' roads.

But yes, the roads to it don't seem to be classified. Probably to discourage 'rat running' to the airport (a rat run I used many times when I used to drive  )

That's the original Addington, now known as Addington Village - definitely a different settlement.

If the whole thing is built, then it will probably end up incorporating Longstanton and just touch the B1050, so our successors might debate whether it has a classified road or not!

I use it as a bit of a shortcut too, plus it's quieter down the B6540 as far as the A50, where it stops as opposed to carrying on through Castle Donington, instead of logically (IMHO) continuing down Trent Lane and then through CD then going between EMA and DP and ending on the A453

Castle Donington's claim is due to its bypass, though, so I don't think it really counts! There's never been a classified road through Codsall.

Most of these places seem to be on the outskirts of cities, with plenty of classified roads round about.

I always thought Strensall, north-east of York, looked odd on a map for precisely this reason.

I doubt it beats New Addington.

The thing about West Chiltington Common is that it covers a large area, but the population is deceptively small, because it's got lots of big houses with mahoosive gardens, so it's very spread out. Quite unlike New Addington...

No, Strensall has a population of only about 4k. Haxby is about twice the size, and doesn't have any classified roads within the urban area, although it is bounded by the A1237 and B1363.
