Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
I don't see the issue - we use the M62/A63/A1033 to get to Spurn Point - it's a high quality dual carriageway into the centre of Hull, albeit speed restricted within the urban area but that's appropriate.ellandback wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 18:24 Yorkshire Live article.
Extensive quotes from some website I've never heard of.

'Coun Mancey said: “Hull could really benefit from the extension of the M1 up to the Humber Bridge". '
I wonder how he envisages that idea working, his thoughts would be interesting to hear!

One issue. It ends on the A1(M) near Leeds.

Indeed! To be charitable to him, it could have been a typo by the newspaper and maybe he actually said M11.

The cost would be very high, cause lots of disruption and a fair amount of demolition for the last couple of miles into the docks just to give some local politician bragging rights.
What is actually happening is the improvement of access for NMU traffic along the corridor.

Wow, something I said ten years ago is now filler material in a non-story

The headline contradicts the article's text, which is that the M62 doesn't end at Hull but some 13 miles west of it.
Gotta love some clickbaitey local media crap with a weird headline.

Yes, it’s bobbins from top to bottom and front to back. Who even reads these websites?

Well, I read the article with a sense of 'whit?' An example of the Mail headline type of 'Does Cheese Cause Squirrels' where the last para reads 'no'

I once read a very learned journalist’s take on this, which has stayed with me ever since: if the headline is a question, the answer is no. Try it! A question is the headline writer’s last resort if they need to make something out of a non-story.exiled wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 10:22Well, I read the article with a sense of 'whit?' It's called Betteridge's Law Of Headlines and it's generally very reliable. (If they were presenting it as fact then they'd say so, rather than hedging.)

I believe there is a page on Facebook called QTWTAIN that seems relevant here.

Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
Apart from anything else, the article that started the thread contains one of my journalistic pet hates - use of a phrase like "a Yorkshire city" in a headline when the actual name would be far shorter.
Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
Kingston upon Hull is one letter longer.

Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
Yes but it's shortened to Hull in about 99.9% of headlines.
Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
Yes but the phrase “actual name” was used, not “common nickname”.

Re: "Why the M62 suddenly ends at a Yorkshire city"
Then again, the actual city where the M62 ends would be North Cave. Maybe the better headline would have been “Why the M62 suddenly ends in a Yorkshire village”?
Maybe the more likely path forward to have the Humber Bridge better connected to the South, for which I can see a case, is to extend the A15 expressway to the A1. And with the A1 being largely expressway or motorway until the M11, you’re also where Hull wants to be, right? It’s “only” 30 miles between the Southern end of the Humber Bridge expressway and Lincoln, and from there you’re in a reasonable shape for the A1 already via the existing A46.
Ah, the old dream of politicians in that region. It’s only a 120 mile extension…
