M6 J17 Improvements: Exhibition opened yesterday (8/10/14)

Post by Benny »

Seemingly overlooked by other press outlets?

Currently the priority is for local traffic travelling along the A534 with vehicles wishing to join the motorway having to battle to turn right across this flow. The new setup will have a roundabout at one end and traffic lights at the other.

The A5022 'short cut to the A50 Northbound' is no help either, I've seen many a driver literally ignore the give way lines and tear across to the Southbound M6 onslip. The answer here would be to make the A5022 less attractive to Jonny Short-Cut and his friends.

"north east of Crewe" - is it too hard to say Sandbach? Everyone knows that is the Sandbach junction!

About time too. A diamond is fine at 39 but not here.

I assume the "Use J16 for Crewe" signs will be removed once the works are complete.

The proposed traffic lights will make the A5022, pictured below with a car in view, less of a problem.

I find the idea of making the A5022 "less attractive" in any way can only mean one thing - an outbreak of 50-itis - a very contagious road disease that has affected most neighbouring roads.

Doubt it, not with the new Crewe Green Link Road and improvements to J16 underway.

J17 is currently very substandard for that length of the M6. It's an unusual approach signalising half of the junction and using a roundabout on the other side though.

It will possibly improve things for a short while, but there are plans for new developments just off the new roundabout. So the story is put in some improvements for the motorway, then almost immediately overload them with new traffic flows. You couldn't make it up !! This junction needs much more work, like an additional bridge to make a full roundabout over the motorway.

The Jn 16 improvements will also not improve things for very long either. Cheshire East are now completing the Link Road to the A500 dual-carriageway and a large development site is being opened up, all of which will cause increased traffic. Jn 16 needs a three-level interchange with the A500 passing straight across. And then there is Junction 15........

Maybe some new motorways are needed, but don't say it too loudly in case the BANANAS are listening. Hopefully HS2 will keep them busy for a while !

Reminds me of M1 J13 not so many years ago.

According to the local rag, M6 J17 will be closed overnight from 3rd November for about 4 months - between 8pm & 5am on weekdays and 8pm & 7am on weekends.

Sounds like something is starting to happen on-site soon then.

Thread resurrection!

Now that my mother has moved to the area, I use this road quite a lot and the improvements have made it worse for people wanting to use the A534 as an actual road, rather than the glorified sliproad it has become.

All of these pis*pot schemes are just spatchcocking, or another description would be "kicking the can down the road".

And there is still the uncontrolled right turn from the A5022 on to the A534, although the traffic lights mean you've now got a better chance of getting a gap in the traffic.

Removing the A5022 from the equation would help but the extra distance involved by going via Arclid won't prove popular. Perhaps making the A5022 northbound only would be the best compromise?
