The Motorway Archive Project

Post by M4Simon »

The motorway archive project is being carried out by the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT) and others. Check out the following link for more information.

The idea is that, in the same way as Britain's Railway heritage is reasonably well documented, the motorway network ought to be as well.
Sir Peter Baldwin wrote: (quote taken from IHT site)
"The motorway system, built in the second half of the 20th century, thus provides the landward arteries of the national economy and serves more effectively than any other publicly provided instrument to counter territorial disadvantages within the economy. This achievement is on the same scale as the construction of the railway system in the 19th century. Railways are well documented; motorways are not. So a great voluntary effort was suggested by Sir Peter Baldwin, former Permanent Secretary of the then Department of Transport from 1976 to 1982. It began in 1996 among surviving protagonists in the public enterprise of motorways to create a first-hand archive of their experience and its significance. This is being gathered into the custody of the Motorway Archive Trust who will be administering access to it in material and electronic form. Look to these Web pages for a short history of the motorways and for further news in due course. "

Hope you find this interesting - and let's hope that as data becomes available, it will be made available publicly.
