Hi folks,

It's time to select your favourite photo from this month's entries. Please have a look at the Photo of the Month October 2010 Gallery, and place your vote. The winning photo will be displayed on the SABRE front page and in the banner during October.

The poll will run until around 8:20pm on Thursday 30 September.

I don't really understand why people are choosing the Humber Bridge, when I cannot see any roads on it at all. It's not like a bridge is going to represent SABRE. I voted for M20 J8.

It's a good photo of an impressive structure that holds a lot of interest to people, as well as carrying the A15 road. I can see why people have voted for it.

I can't see why people are voting for the (very good) Humber Bridge, when there's the M74 construction that has more going on, and makes a nice change from the rural photos of the last couple of months.

That's why I submitted the Burdock Way shot - something a little different, and not a scenic shot.

Photography is a very subjective thing though. What one person likes isn't going to be what the next person likes.

Personally I prefer bold, colourful photos which is why I tend to produce that kind of thing. Anyone familiar with my Flickr will also know that I tend to mostly do countryside based landscape stuff.

Which is one of the reasons why I didn't say "no idea why people are voting for Burdock Way". Humber Bridge just seems too grey for me, whereas the M74 is full of colour. But then each to his own.

Must admit I thought the bridge photo was typical of previous POTM entries, which is why I submitted it. Sorry to those who were expecting something a little bit different.

I liked Burdock Way and the Great Dorset Steam Fair - both unusual photos of fairly common scenes. The A82 has simply fantastic scenery.

Johnny, don't worry, it's a great photo, will make a great banner and POTM, and I've been on the wrong side of the vote recently, going with urban roadworks, rather than rural little roads. Humber Bridge is a change, but it's not enough for me, that's all.

I usually try to submit a photo that takes into consideration the shape of the banner, and I don't vote for my own photo.

On a composition note, the Humber Bridge photo gives problems for those who will be preparing the banner: the fingerpost being on the left means that it'll be in the fade to white area, and also it'll be difficult to keep both the bridge and the fingerpost in the crop. It also breaks some of the usual rules of composition (eg. leading the eye out of the frame of the picture and away from the main subject), but that's probably just me being picky. [Puts jam on own nose and crawls back in teapot.]

Bah, no votes! :x Apart from my own, the Churchill barrier is my favourite on the nominations gallery.

I had noticed that but decided to keep it quiet as people can make up their own opinions on whether it would work or not. It wasn't taken with POTM in mind otherwise I'd have chosen a better angle.

Anyway, it's a bit early to talk about the banner as the competition is far from over.

Say what? I voted for the Humber Bridge shot because I liked the photo, but now I'm going to have a think about why I like it. It's got lots of contrast - the picture has three distinct areas: the sky, the water, and the grass. There are then two bold features: the bridge, spanning the picture; the fingerpost, giving a close-up focal point.

The M74 roadworks picture largely is grey, all across the ground and much of the cloudy sky. It's too fussy, with the barriers and all the detail in the picture, but no clear focal point. The viaduct could be a focal point, but with the disjointed scaffolding it isn't bold enough, and the colour is too similar to the sky, which doesn't give enough contrast for it to stand out properly. Plus, the positioning of it within the composition doesn't lead your eye through the picture. No offence meant to Paul, but it doesn't come across as as well put together as some of the others.

While I like scenic shots, and was erring towards the Churchill Barrier, I also particularly admired the Burdock Way and M20 shots, which were well composed and would equally have made good banners.

The Humber Bridge has ended up a winner, but not a runaway winner.
It's a pretty decent photo but I just feel it is slightly off topic.

Eh? It's a british road being carried over an estuary by a bridge? How is that off topic? It's not like its the viaduc de Millau is it...

Nothing wrong with the Millau Viaduct either. The Forth Rail Bridge on the other hand...

They're as good as each other - both of them only fail half of the being "British Roads".

We're a society of British and Irish Road enthusiasts. That can mean two things: enthusiasts of British and Irish Roads or Road enthusiasts that are British and Irish. We're flexible on the meaning.

The Forth Rail bridge is off-topic, the Millau Viaduct isn't. The former goes in the off-topic discussion, the latter goes in the road forums.

The former isn't a road, the latter isn't British or Irish. I've regarded the foreign roads forum as one that strictly speaking is off-topic but gets put in with the on-topic forums because of the closeness of interest for members.
