A while back I was driving to Salisbury, and got bored of the big roads.
I went down a hill and at the bottom saw a permanent mounted Traffic under signal control sign. My first thought was that it was a roadworks sign that had been mounted to a taller object due to the hill gradient.
Turned out it was joining a narrow road that was controlled by lights.
I was reminded of this by the odd street furniture thread with the turn lights.

Did anyone ever trial lights on these signs to indicate the current direction of travel? While the road's busy, it is easy to see what's happening. When it's quiet so you can't tell the running direction and turn, that's when Murphy's Law kicks in and you end up with oncoming traffic.

When we were up at Ross On Wye, I was coming out of a car park that had a long roadworks contraflow.
It was all nice and quiet until I turned right out of the car park. Then a massive platoon started to come right at me! (Managed to duck to the side in a property access)

I always thought that the traffic under signal control signs should only be used where you can actually see both traffic lights? Otherwise it should be 3/4-way lights. Or am I completely barking up the wrong tree here?

Where abouts is this permament sign in Salisbury? Any chance of a GSV link? I've certaintly never seen a permament version before.

I have seen at least one narrow road on GSV which had a set of traffic lights like this:

Code:
oo
oo
<>

mounted on one side of the road facing into a tiny opposite side road, as well as the regular "green ball" lights at either end.

I don't remember where it is, though... but it's most likely I found it by following a link someone else posted here in a previous thread about the same subject.

The main reason I remember it so well is it seemed so over-the-top to have a 6-light set for such a tiny tiny road :)
