As a starter for 10, they're roughly north-to-south.

Two points for each image identified, a further four for getting the connection.

Truvelo rule applies. Actually, all answers by PM, please.

Truvelo has cracked it already!

I'll take yes/no questions in thread.

Doing my head in! Looks dead familiar but I just can't quite place it. As for the others I have no idea.

I'd love to know where No 2 is so I can go and get some of that cheap petrol!

(or they need to sort the sign illumination out)

I can't vouch for the age of the picture :P

swarkestonecauseway has joined Truvelo in getting the connection and all three locations.

Leader board:

1. Truvelo 10/10
2. swarkestonecauseway 10/10

Er ... that's it.

Is No.2 the A38 between Alrewas and Fradley, looking North?

Other than that, no idea...is the connection Roman Roads?

Sorry, newbie, no point in PMing for 2 points???

Top one had me stumped for a while, but then I worked out the connection for the other two, then it was fairly easy!

Yes, Jeni has got all three locations and the connection.

Leaderboard:

1. Truvelo 10/10
2. swarkestonecauseway 10/10
3. Jeni 10/10

Keep trying folks, there is one clear point of evidence in the thread already, just need a bit of intuition and it's not too hard - at least I think it's a lot easier than my first two.

Just to say I'll close this by Friday lunchtime and give the solution.

OK, time for the answers.

Picture 1 is Rykneld Road, Derby, just south of Littleover. It used to be the A38, then was the A5250, and is probably now unclassified, depending on which map you rely on.

Picture 2 is the A38 at Fradley, from the overpass. This doesn't appear to have a name of its own.

Picture 3 is Icknield Street, near Weatheroak, Worcestershire.

The connection is that they're all on the line of the Roman road we now call "Ryknild Street" (sometimes spelt Rykneld or Ryknield, other variant spellings may exist). Despite the name of the road in picture 3, it has nothing to do with the ancient Icknield Way, which is a pre-roman track in southern England, very little of which is motorable, but there were many years of confusion before the current name was settled on, so the "Icknield" appellation can be found a lot around Birmingham and Redditch.

So the answer to "Do they all have the same name" was "No" because in modern times they don't.

Well done to the three winners, thanks to everyone else who had a go, and I'll do another one in a few weeks.

Judging by the three winners it seems local knowledge played a part.

Aye, I think so, and of course I'm local myself on this occasion.

It did- top one put me onto it. Once I'd worked out where that was, the connection was easy and that allowed me to work out the others.
