This one still has a mercury lamp to differentiate the junction, but the rest of the lanterns have been converted to SON.

Just thought I'd share a few old Highfield Manor photos from Eaton Road, West Derby, Liverpool from 1975...

I doubt this one will survive until 2013! Grand survivor though.

There's a nice example of a metal crescent bracket here complete with a Z5590 :)

I spotted some interesting lanterns this weekend in St Andrews.

The first lantern is a modern reproduction, older lanterns were never as bulky as that. I'm not sure what type it is though. The third lantern is a modern Urbis Abbey lantern, I can tell by the reflector.

Only the second image shows a genuinely old installation. The first one is relatively new, as it appears to be a steel column with embellishment kit, and the lantern is of a style that is so old that it can only be a modern reproduction, apart from the obvious use of clear fully enclosed bowl, refractor ring and SON lamp. The bracket is of a style that can still be purchased to this day.

AN UPDATE HERE TO MY PREVIOUS POSTING....AND IT'S NOT GOOD!

Well, impending death of Mercury lighting???? I don't think so, not around Llandudno.

REJOYCE!!!!!

Found 4 to 5 streets in Penrhyn Bay-just about a mile or 2 east of Llandudno crammed full of Mercury. Some appear to be swan neck types and a couple of side entries-they are Eleco's I think.

One or two were dayburning (in Mercury) and apart from that looked in pretty good nick to be honest.

Morfa Road
Penrhyn Isaf road
St.Davids Road
Merivale Road
Bryn View Road ALL are in Penrhyn Bay-NOT in Llandudno itself.

Some lovely examples, if you are into Mercury lighing, you are in for a treat! They are very well preserved and the columns too. ENJOY!!!

UNFORTUNATELY.... A VERY SAD UPDATE.....
I drove by Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay, Rhos on Sea area today...

THEY ARE ALL GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldnt see ANY of them left, all gone. Replaced by a bottom entry grey Urbis Sapphires... :(

Its an absolute tragedy as they all appeared in really good condition. It must be about 30 or 40 examples binned. I hope some went to collectors.

Mercury is just getting rarer and rarer, soon the only ones left will be in the hands of private collectors... :(

It's so very sad.....RIP mercuries... :(

I'm sure there's an EU ban coming into force on the use of mercury.

Yes I know. I think it comes into force around 2015. Incidentally there has been a hell of a lot of mercury streetlighting cullings recently.

Warrington has lost nearly all of its mercury and most of it has been replaced by fluorescent lamps. I think this is part of a p.f.i. Project.

North Yorkshire- loads lost due to "concrete pole" replacements. North and East Yorkshire has had mercury numbers dwindling fast. Some of the more remote outlying villages particularly around York, Harrogate, skip ton and Ripon have escaped but probably not for long.

Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire undertaking big P.F.I. Projects to replace all its more old streetlighting. While many urban streets have been de-mercuried many of the rural villages around Northampton and Cambridge have shed loads of mercury....not for much longer. :( :( :( :( :(

Kent and Sussex are the only areas with lots of mercury left and I guess it's only a matter of time now before they are gone......

Nottingham still had quite a lot of Mercury until recently but they have a PFI on now so it might have all gone or will go soon :(

I thought all the mercury in Dudley had now bitten the dust but I managed to see this Revo Prefect today. Go back five years and Dudley was full of mercury.
