Here's a little pop question then. Where and when was the last new SOX installation on Great Britain's motorway network?

It was not on a motor way as such but on the A45 was the last main sox casual replacement with about 5 new ma60's going up with in the past two years.

Even they are due to be replaced and scrapped! not even going to be reusing them too

I think in 5 years there will be no SOX left on the HA's network :(

Does anyone know whether this stretch has actually had it's columns trashed yet? I prefer to document the lights as they go, rather than as they are planned to go.

M53 or M62?

In both cases, the SOX is still there....only just on the M62, as brand new side crash barriers are up meaning lamp replacement is now imminent.

This doesn't affect all the remaining SOX on the M62 though does it?

I know of a few recent like for like replacements on the M25 between J23-26 when a few were bent by collisions.

The HA still do casually replace SOX with SOX in most cases which I believe is good practice. However all replacement schemes since at least the late 90s (I think) have been mostly SON with a bit of MH and even LED creeping in more recently.

I believe 5 to 6 will be done under the Knowsley MBC PFI, along with the axing of the high-masts from 5 to 4.

The ones around J10 at Croft are being replaced according to the Highways Agency.

HA wrote:
M62 Jct 9-10 lighting scheme - the central reserve lighting will be replaced by new verge lighting.
M62 Jct10 Croft lighting - replacing the existing lighting with new verge lighting. New verge barriers will also be installed.
M62 Jct10-11 barriers - replacing the existing verge barriers in both directions. Replacing central resevre barriers with a conrete barrier and improving drainage,
M6 to M62 merges - increasing the M6 links to the M62 eastbound to improve the traffic flow. Upgrading existing drainage and lighting and barriers.

So J5-6 is not maintained by the HA but by Knowsley MBC? If so, this is similar to the M65 between J10-14 which is maintained by Lancs CC. You can tell this by the unusual use of Vectras along this section

Yes, the M62 is non-trunk west of J6. One consequence is that there are no driver location signs.

Non-trunk motorways? That's interesting. What I don't get though is why the same high mast lights are used between J4-J5 and on Queensdrive seem to be the same installation, despite being in both Liverpool & Knowsley. I'm guessing they were put up by the contractors that built the motorway.

I guess with the Knowsley PFI, the high mast lights will remain on the Liverpool side of the boundary. If so, I hope Knowsley give Liverpool some spare parts, especially as one of the ones on Queens Drive is missing its canopy.

I just drove along the M1 inside the M25 today, and it's good to know that the last catenary lights are still soldiering on, even though some of the posts are beginning to look a bit rusty.

This last installation of catenary lighting should be listed imo!

Speaking of the high mast lighting on hte M62 J4-5, I've notice that the ones in Knowsley have had huge floolight-type lights retrofitted over the old lights. Not sure if these are still SON or metal halide. They look ugly just being tacked on like that. Would've been better to have completely replaced the lighting unit. I assume this is part of Knowley's PFI and that the masts are not coming down after all. Liverpool's ones remain unaltered.

You mean they haven't removed the old lights but instead have fitted new lights over the top of them? That sounds a bit strange! Perhaps the old lights will be removed soon.

Are the old lights these type of lanterns as seen on Wallasey's website?

The SOX on the A1(M) around Hatfield is still there - I fully expected it to be gone as part of the Hatfield Tunnel works, but that's not happened.

Further north on the A1, new lights went up in the last year from St Neots down to Sandy, but from there the old SOX lights persist until the end of the lit section south of Biggleswade.
