Yes, very odd design but it was the recommended way of showing which lane went which way - presumably as a predecessor to the upward-pointing arrows that we use now.Truvelo wrote:That's an old design. I've only just seen this thread, lovely photo - gantries have evolved!
Incidentally, the diagram shown on the gantry (and existant on Queen's Drive, Liverpool), can still be reproduced in KeySigns...

I call those worm signs. The first one I ever saw was in central London in 1967, I think, and had four worms. It was many years before I saw another. I can't remember where I last saw one.wallasey wrote:Almost the same method of lane finding!
