Interesting old ganty signs

Post by Dougman »

Found this old gantry whilst browsing the Retro Dundee blog. (Scroll down to the post from the 30th August regarding the opening of the Tay Road Bridge).

A lot neater than we would be install today :)

That's an old design. There used to be a similar sign for the A34/A453 GSJ in old sign publications.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?
Big and complex.

Yes, very odd design but it was the recommended way of showing which lane went which way - presumably as a predecessor to the upward-pointing arrows that we use now.

I've only just seen this thread, lovely photo - gantries have evolved!

Incidentally, the diagram shown on the gantry (and existant on Queen's Drive, Liverpool), can still be reproduced in KeySigns...

I call those worm signs. The first one I ever saw was in central London in 1967, I think, and had four worms. It was many years before I saw another. I can't remember where I last saw one.

Great terminology - I like it! If we can have butterfly signs, then why not? :)
