Signposts directly in the road

Post by Keiji »

Clicking around from an unrelated Spanish GSV link, I ended up at this roundabout, which has several sign poles directly seated into the tarmac, rather than in an island - i.e. they are not protected by kerbs or a verge.

That's something I've never seen before (not counting poles right next to walls on narrow roads where there is no pavement, which are plentiful around the UK it seems).

How many countries actually do their signposts like this? Are there any UK examples?

God I hope they are passively safe (they don't look like the are).

This at the bottom end of the M77 is probably our most infamous example.

Quite common in Mallorca, that one.

There's this one on the M53 - but that's further away from the running lanes than the example you've given.

And if you follow the road a bit further, this nice big direction sign, which has one leg behind the barrier and the other embedded in a huge block of concrete in front of it. Yikes!

Looks like a casualty reduction scheme equivalent - with some questionable design!

Easier than cutting the trees! It is so representative of the roads in Wallonia :(

Not quite as bad, but I've never liked the look of these lamp posts along the Nene Valley Way

Two examples on the M1 (northbound in the link but there is the same southbound too), and the same on the M6 near Rugby too.
