Caen to Sees - The A88

Post by pontyslapper »

I'm bringing this forthcoming autooute up due to the fact that my parents have just returned to France for their latest stint at the holiday home.

The old man has beaten my 'record' of 5hrs 30 from Caen to the house which is about 45 minutes south of Poitiers. I set the record when the peage was pretty sketchy all the way down.

He said he was peage bound all the way from Alencon to Chateaulerault - the only way he'd get close to the record. I wonder what I'll do it in when I go down next weekend.

Anyhow - the A88 - will link Caen to Sees by 2010 and could mean a heck of a reduction in journey times south from Ouistreham. Website in French http://www.a88.info
Its not the 3 points I object to, but the £120 for B&W photos of the car!

What a coincidence! We stay about 40 minutes NORTH of Poitiers when we go to France in summer!

We had a ferry to catch from Boulogne though, but for a change we went home via the A10, A28, and A16 instead of the A85 and A11 to the A28.

It is bloody fast, but expensive. The A88 signs are already in place at Sees on the A28, but are boarded up with yellow CAEN signs. Very untidy, really...

Bryn,

I'm paying £323 for the Portsmouth - Caen crossing this summer with Brittany Ferries after discounts. The prices are ludicrous!

I've been across with LD Lines a few times - quite an experience. Its a Dover - Calais tub on Portsmouth - Le Havre. Its very rare to get a cabin but its cheap and cheerful (if you take your own wine, sarnies and pillow.).

You might or might not know where our place is - Its in a little place called Thollet not a million miles from Montmorillon and La Trimouille. We're actually right on the 'nasty' bend on the D121.

The old man said that it cost 10.90€ and 6.50€ on the peage - I don't class that as expensive when you consider its a fiver to cross the Severn these days! I mean £5 for a few miles over 17.40€ for a few hundred kilometers...
