TSRGD 1957

Re: TSRGD 1957
Looking through the town name signs there isn't one showing place names top and bottom like the Overbury sign. In fact I've never seen any examples of the Romsey sign with just one destination.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Re: TSRGD 1957
I've got such a place name sign shown in the report of 1944/46. It must have been changed for the 1957 report.

Re: TSRGD 1957
Is there any change that someone could upload this (and other relevant volumes) to the SABRE Wiki?
It supports PDFs quite happily, for example, this one.

Re: TSRGD 1957
I could upload the one I've cut from the original PDF, although if Pierre has made a better copy, that might be more appropriate? The one I've got, with the various amendments, Scottish ones and speed limit regs is 23Mb - would that be too big?
I'll have a look and see if I can work out how to upload the other documents I've done recently.
Edit: uploaded the MT736, MT801 (in 5 parts!) and CR26/68 PDFs. There seems to be a file size limit, so the 57 regs file isn't uploadable. Does anyone know what the file size limit is?

Also interesting that the 1944 "GSJ" map sign from the Winchester Bypass isn't in the 1957 regs.pierre.hartmann88 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 21:47 I've got such a place name sign shown in the report of 1944/46. It must have been changed for the 1957 report.

Re: TSRGD 1957
I noticed many changes, most evident of course the new signs for "Cattle" and "One Way Traffic", as well as the change from the torch to children pictograms.
Also, the font size and arrows of the "Turn" signs have been changed. The arrows are now only half the size of their predecessors.
I'm also missing the "Flyover" direction sign.
My enhanced PDF version of the TSRGD 1957 is about 44 MB. I can't upload it. It might be to big.

For those who are also interested in the TSRGD 1964, here's a link.
It's available via Google books.
It seems to me as if they're scanning loads of old statutory instruments books at the moment.
It starts on page 4053.
By the way the report of 1944 is also available.

Some wonderful but shocking photos here of a 1978 M6 Contraflow in an Old UK Police Cars facebook group.Conekicker wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 20:39You say that but I well remember being asked to comment (off the record thankfully), on the TM at the scene of a fatality at a contraflow in North Yorkshire in the late '90s. Some bright spark had used an emergency crossover as a 50mph one. 27m long, I ask you. Even making a start from the nearside lane, the length was no more than 60m. The deceased might have survived were it not for a lorry that, it was believed, that had recently refuelled a short way before the crossover and not properly fastened the fuel tank cap back on. Taking the crossover at the highest speed possible resulted in diesel slopping out all over the road. That and the fact the initial taper was grossly short, as was the length of nearside lane running before the entry crossover. The signing on the drawing I saw was "somewhat deficient" (cough) as well.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 14:07 It is well documented that early contraflows ended up as a bit of a disaster - the big problem was people binning their car/lorry in the taper area as police crossovers were used in the early days. It was well into the 70s when someone had the bright idea to actually construct a crossover for 50mph.
The contraflow drawing in MT801 is terrifying. Presumably operational experience quickly highlighted the problems but it took until '68 for the then Ministry of Transport to issue Circular Roads 26, which fixed some but by no means all of the issues in the MT801 layout.

I've got PDFs of all of them, but the 75 and 81 are all monochrome. So if yours are in colour, wetransfer.com?Bryn666 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 01, 2021 10:23I have got scans of the 1964, 75, and 81 regs on my Google Drive but the images need tidying up, if you're interested.Conekicker wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 19:54Pierre,pierre.hartmann88 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 12:52 For those who are also interested in the TSRGD 1964, here's a link.

I'll PM you with them, full colour, scanned straight from book. I read some of the comments on that Facebook page and they seem to be suggesting that contraflows were the idea of the Motorway Police in the 70s, but I'm taking that with a fair bit of salt.

The 1964 TSRGD is out of Crown Copyright so colour scans are fine to share. The monochrome government copies are a bit pants in that respect.
