I've just got back from this part of the world, and I noticed that the B831 and B832 no longer exist - and there's nice patches on the signage all saying "A818" instead.

Now, both the RD and Rx10 mention the "new" A818, and the now-defunct B831, but neither of them mention the fact that B832 also seems defunct.

The Rx10 writeup is also slightly incorrect, in that Helensburgh traffic usually used the B831/B832 combination in preference to the trawl through Dumbarton on A814. The signage on the ground now simply respects that fact, although Helensburgh is still signed via A814 from the east.

The former B832 section has also been widened, and some of the bends on the former B831 appear to have been slightly realigned.

the B832 isn't deunct - it goes from the A82 to the A818.

Not according to the signage, Simon...

Edit: Although the B832 does appear on the latest Navigator, the signage definately says simply "Local Traffic Only" at both ends, and Helensburgh - Luss traffic is signed via A818.

Signage can be wrong you know. For example, this sign, despite Nic's insistence, does show the wrong number (it should be A631).

Oh yes, I'm well aware of that, Paul.

However, maps have also been known to be wrong...

(or, of course, simply not caught up!)

I've now emailed Argyll and Bute council to find out for sure - let's hope we get a reply!

Got a reply now:

Quote:
The Decleration changing B831 and part B832 to the A818 was formally made on 7 January 2005 .
The remainining section of the B832 remains classified however is signed that way to discourage through traaffic and heavy vehicles.

There we go! B832 lives after all, although the A818 entry on Rx10 could do with updating with regard to the date of the change, and generally tidying up.

I'll scribble a couple of paragraphs if you like, Lez.

A818: Helensburgh to A82

According to the 1922 listing, this was a very short link road in Campbeltown from the A83 to the pier. There appears to be no evidence of this in late 1930s atlases, so it must have been lost early.

On 7 January 2005, the number was recycled to take over the B831 and the southern part of the B832 between the A82 and Helensburgh.

This was always the preferred route into Helensburgh, avoiding the slow signposted route via A814 through Dumbarton - and the now-A818 has seen much improvement in recent years.

How's that?
