The poor old A74(M) will probably only a few years to live :msncry:.

But what should happen to the seventy-four?

I personally believe the A74(M) should become M74 north of J24 and M6 south of it :!: .

I don't know what to vote for.
Renumbering the A74(M) and M74 the M6 would make sense (just peel the patches off the signs  ).

Or, renumbering the A74(M) and M74 the M7 makes sense too, as it will be having a Scottish number.

On the other hand renumbering the A74(M) the M74 retains the heritage of the road/route. The '74' conjures up images of vehicles travelling over the mountainous route to Scotland/England, often in adverse conditions. The '74' is an iconic number for an inconic road, and shouldn't be lost.

How about renaming it M6 and calling the B7076/B7078 A74?

Probably Won't happen but it would be nice. I voted to rename it M74.

I know I said I want the A74(M) to become M74 but I have changed my mind. It should now be M7, with the B7076/B7078 going back to A74 (secondary road, of course except the bit that is currently A701)!!!

Thing is, when the CG is closed, there will be a continous motorway from rugby to glasgow. Why should it have 3 numbers?! Renumbering the whole thing as M6 just makes so much sense. IMO the M6 near the lake district and the A74(M) look very similar from the road, although ive only seen photos.

The furthest north ive been on the motorway network is M6 J36 for a holiday in the lakes a couple of years ago.

I missed out on the M6 at shap, supposed to be the most scenic motorway in the country :-(

I agree with Gavin, make it M7.

Why M7? does a road suddenly change its number anywhere else when it crosses a county/region (oh sorry country) boarder? if theres no gap anymore it would be weird a mway changing numbers for no apparent reason. if the scots want to isolate themselves more why dont they renumber the A1 and A68 north of the boarder as well?

I know the London/Edinburgh rules don't aply to single digit motorways, but renaming it the M7 is just silly. Either the M6 to give a continuous numbering system, or leave it as the M74 though doing away with the A74(M) bit which I've never really understood why it was used.

More importantly it would be nice if they could build the last couple of bits soon.

Isn't this because the A74(M) was an online upgrade of the A74 and built in the day when the A*(M) numbering system was in full swing; the M74 was built separately?

I think the most senisble idea is to renumber the whole thing M6, with the current B7076 and 78 renumbered as non-primary A74.

The A74(M) was built in the 1990's. Thats why calling it the A74(M) was so stupid. It should have been numbered the M6 from the beginning, as this was always the intention. It would have kicked the HA into gear about upgrading the CG. The M6 should have reached Glasgow about 10 years ago!

Yes, the A550 suddenly disappears into the A494 multiplex at the Welsh border (and vice versa).

Here's an idea. How about renumbering the A74(M) and M74 up to J4 as M6, then having the M6 doing a totso and taking over the M73, leaving the M74 between J1-J3 as it is?

It might sound like motorway overkill :!: but it's just an idea and I'm sort of assuming that the Glasgow M74 extension might not happen due to the forthcoming legal action by Glasgow's residents. If that remains the case, then my idea means a continuous road from Rugby to Glasgow with the same number, but allowing a small stretch to retain the M74 number, as a spur from the M6.

That way, all those sentimental to the M74 number (including myself) would get something to sing about :) once the CG is filled in and the rest of the road becomes M6. I can't imagine there being many people who share the same affection for the M73, which of course would die a complete death instead. I'm also sure people would agree that the M6 should terminate on another motorway like the M8 or M80 and not in the middle of Glasgow's suburbs.

Of course, the M74 extension could still take place, meaning that that would get the M6 number instead, meaning the M73 survives and the M74 dies instead. :(

I agree with you on renaming the B roads, such as the B7076 and B7078. Personally, I'd like to see them as a non-primary A74. It would make things easier. I have been on both these roads in recent years and they're terrific, particularly the small remaining dual carriageway sections from yesteryear. They're worthy of an A road status.

However, I would like to see the A74(M) renamed the M74. I've never really fully understood why the same stretch of road north of Gretna has two different numbers.
