Frejus Tunnel Signals?

Post by Chris56000 »

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the (presumably normally green!) signals near the roof of the Frejus Tunnel N543 between France and Italy are for?

Do they only display green/red or do they have an amber aspect as well?

We noticed them when we came back from our Italian Motoring Holiday last year – using the Tunnel as my friend Steve didn't fancy driving back over another load of twisting hairpin passes!

From the Tunnel French exit we used the A43 and then the D1006 to that evening's night stop at St. Andre La Gaz!

Do you mean in the tunnel itself or only at the tunnel portals? This image of the Hindhead Tunnel shows only red and green and it is likely that the Frejus Tunnel is much the same. BTW, I drove through the Frejus Tunnel in December 2001 but things might well have changed since then and I can't remember details that far back anyway. I have visited the tunnel in the last few minutes, courtesy of Mr Google. There are certainly amber lights a few hundred metres from the French portal, but they are on the tunnel wall, not the roof.

If I were to guess their purpose, the amber might well be used to tell you to slow down because the distance between you and the car ahead is less than 150 metres. The red almost certainly means stop (without asking questions).

Yes, my mistake, they are on the tunnel walls, near the top on the right hand side facing you in the direction of travel – they definitely are red/green only within the main tunnel itself!

GREEN is normal flow RED means STOP there is no AMBER. BLUE are separation distance markers
