A35 Tebourba Way, Southampton - either 1953 or 1955 - I've forgotten which. There's a plaque halfway up with the exact date on it, if anyone local wants to take a look. It was a trunk road at the time.

The A87 at Loch Cluanie and the longest cul de sac in the country at Loch Quoich were both in the process of being rebuilt on new lines in 1956, because the old roads were shortly to be flooded by hydro schemes.

A20 Ashford bypass 1958 (finally completed in that year earthworks were started in the late 1930's but work finished during the war and finally did not complete until the late 1950's. The Maidenhead by pass and parts of the A1 in N Yorks had similar delays)

My 1960 copy of Motoring In Scotland has the A87 still running from Tomdoun to Cluanie (must have been an "interesting" drive!) with Cluanie dam still not complete though it sounds as if the new road was not long off opening ("expected to be completed by the Summer").

When did the bridge at Dornie replace the ferry? The ferry was in use in 1930 but the bridge was there in 1960.

A1 Stilton bypass opened by David (later Lord) Renton in July 1958.
The Hunts Post of the day said "the first bypass to be opened to traffic since the announcement of the Government's intention to make the A1 a major north south traffic route designed to cope with modern traffic conditions."
It cost 2.5 million

The situation with the Fabian Way is bizarre, as most of the road existed anyway as a B road, albeit as a single-carriageway. The connection up onto the A48 must have been done in the 50s though.

The old A48 through Neath is torturous; no wonder this section was bypassed so early.

A5 Markyate bypass - 1957, from Times archive.
Only 2 years before the M1 would have opened anyway.
M1 opened at 09.30 on Nov 2 1959
