No options as i would be here for hours...

...What is your favourite numbered road on the british mainland. I know we have had favourite motorway way back when but im intrested in what you favourite numbered road is...

As for me it has to be the M25. The excitement when i know im gonna end up on it is unbearable... :)

...So let me know if you want!

...Actually better list a few...

...And its all mainland roads and apologies if there are too many options!

It's hard to say really, as there are so many ways to judge. The M42 is great but far too busy to enjoy, the M6 Toll is nice if you ignore the amount of money you've wasted, and I love the M27 simply because it's my local motorway. And how could I forget the A55?

Five roads which spring to mind, even if I have only used a small fragment of them, are in no order:

M6 (it's a love-hate relationship, this one)
M62
A32
A38
A672

Sixth place should really go to a fast-flowing 90s HQDC. A46 Coventry Bypass is an option, but it's only a small section of a long road.

Or maybe one or two others...

The A6, at least once you get past most of it (i.e. from Kendal northwards).

I do know the A18(M) was murdered by the M180 between the M18 and J1 which is what i am trying to say...

Probably the A25, though obviously I have a soft spot for the A228.

How would you define a favourite road, is it:

A road I've had interest in the history of?
In that case the A14.
A road that has great scenery and a pleasure to drive on?
In that case the M62.
A road I have driven on many times and never had problems with?
In that case the A1.

For me then it would have to be a toss up between the M62 or the A1. The A1 is a good route we use when travelling up north as it's almost always never congested. The M62 is a route I enjoy travelling on because of the scenery, but is more congested than the A1. However, these are of course my opinions and while I've travelled almost the whole length of the M62 I haven't travelled the whole length of the A1.

Traditonaly for me, it was the M6 no question- but I'm having doubts. The A83 at Rest-and-be-thankfull is amazing and, despite what I've heard, I quite like the M40 between Brum and the A34.

I quite like the M3 west of Winchester.

The A6105 between Earlston and Duns is a road I never (nor could ever) tire of.

It has now been 50'd by the motorist-haters of Derbyshire CC, but the A515 from Buxton to Newhaven remains in my view unparalleled in terms of driving enjoyment and the quality of the scenery.

I ignore the stupid speed limit and keep an eagle eye open for Talivans ;)

So many to choose from....

This might be a little surprising, but I'm going for the A9. Its got bits of everything... Tunnels, bridges, high quality dual carriageways, narrow single carriageways, long straights, hairpin bends and everything in between.

In Scotland, there are numerous roads to choose from for me. Despite the criticism it receives, I remain a fan of the A82. Sure, it needs upgrading in places but overall, what a road. Given the right moment, it’s a fabulous drivers road and as I’ve said in the past, throughout the Glen Coe region, it remains just about the finest road in terms of scenery on the UK mainland. The A82 has some terrific bends, very long straights and sweeping curves. The A87 is also a terrific road and much what said about the A82 can be repeated here, especially the scenary. From my experience is also quiet. The A83 as already discussed is also excellent. I have to be in agreement with Gavin about it’s Rest-and-be-thankfull section. Every time I’m up in Scotland I make sure I pay a visit here and take in the views.

In Wales, I thoroughly enjoy using the B5105. This road is the perfect test for any car.

For motorways, I personally find the M5 and M6 enjoyable for much of their lengths and have no problems at all in using either. Similarly, I also enjoy using the scenic A74(M).

If I really had to limit it down to a single road, I’d still have to opt for the stunning A685. I adore this road. It’s the perfect ‘trans-pennine link’ road. It has just about everything for a perfect A road for me. Pleasant scenery, long straights, sweeping bends, hills, places of interest (i.e - Kirkby Stephen, Brough) and most importantly, more than two thirds of it is NSL. The A685 and I go back a long way... I really hope it’s not going to be ruined with needless lower limits, but I know it’s turn will come one day and then it’ll be ruined...

There are plenty of specific sections of classified roads I also enjoy using when I get the opportunity to, but that’s for another day and another poll.

My favourite road is the A68. If I'm driving up to Edinburgh, it's just as quick as the A1, but so much more enjoyable and interesting to drive. Rolling hills, wide sweeping bends, long straights, magnificent views, the occasional town or village if you want to stop.

The only thing that lets it down are the infernal speed cameras in stupid places (I think these are all north of Carter Bar?)

Other roads to nominate are the B1225 from Horncastle to Caistor, the A169 from Pickering to Whitby, the A166 from Stamford Bridge to Driffield and the A614 from Howden to Driffield.

Yes, I love the A82 too, and have even griced it. I particularly love the contrast as it goes from urban Glasgow through the suburbs (some nice and some not so nice) to some of the most beautiful scenery that our country has to offer :D
