There is something very fishy about this. How can the fact that they are using them to count the number of offences be that much cheaper that prosecuting them (and getting the fine revenue), presumably they have not they laid off any staff - their biggest running cost?

I suspect that someone(s) within the scamera partnership and the police are playing at politics. Or has BRAKE decided to fund them?

[quote="Chris Bertram"]Present and correct to express outrage, 2 members of the Thames Valley scamera partnership, and the top cop from TV Roads Division, all shaking their heads sadly (yes, you can hear that on the radio) and predicting carnage if this continues[quote]

I know these 2 members and they are trying to save there bacon as the way it is going there will be no TVRSP next year as other members will pull out following the cuts. It drives me mad when I see there evidence as it is so full of holes. Unfortunately can not say to much more, but please believe me there are people in the industry who do agree with the removal of cameras.

I also heard from a well respected institute that Brake are really annoying alot of people with the rubbish they are currently saying and certain groups no longer want to be associated with them

Oh, I can believe it all right. I can also believe that they've been biting their lips these last few years, for fear of swimming against the tide and endangering their own futures.

No surprise there. In fact I'm amazed that they've been treated so seriously for so long. Almost everything they've ever said has been based on emotional responses rather than hard facts.

You thought it was all over.... it isn't yet ;¬)

TfL tenders for speed cameras

www.kable.co.uk wrote:
Transport for London has published a tender for the provision of average speed cameras for a project it plans to trial. The cameras will be used to "enforce average speed limits in urban areas", according to the notice published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 10 August 2010.

A spokesperson for the department told GC News that the notice is a pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) and that there are no concrete plans in place yet. "We are just looking to see who will apply at the moment," she added.

The spokesperson also disclosed that the PQQ is part of wider work it is currently undertaking with four London boroughs, but would not reveal further details. She suggested that announcements on such projects would be made "post October".

The notice says that the two year contract could be extended if the trial proves successful, which would lead to "a requirement for further systems across London". The organisation envisages that one supplier will participate in the contract.

"We believe that speed cameras reduce the number of accidents on roads and save us money. For instance, cameras can be used as an alternative to road humps," the spokesperson added.

The speed camera notice was published three days after TfL cancelled a tender for road traffic predictive modelling software due to tighter spending measures being introduced at the organisation. A spokesperson told GC News at the time: "If it gets approval then we will re-advertise the notice at that time."

Might just be my wistful thinking, but I wonder how many of these projects will actually proceed once the Autumn Spending review reveals to TfL how much they are going to have cut from their budgets?

Well since the Bolton Brow disaster in 1993 which is one of the reasons they were founded they have gone from being a respectable campaign for safer HGVs to a full blown anti-motoring lobby.

Infiltration from the loons as per usual, sadly.

This Gatso on the A90 at Stonehaven has been set alight. I would like some pictures for my site but it's too far for me to travel so is anyone local able to take some for me?

I theoretically could, although I'm likely to be a bit busy this week. If I find the time for a little trip I'll see what I can do.

Thanks Owen. It's not essential that I get pictures but I like to keep my site updated whenever I hear about one getting vandalised.

You got pics of the burnt out Truvelo on the A45 by Ryton on Dunsmore? (before the roundabout heading towards Cov)...

Worth noting that in the other direction the one at the top of the hill disappeared one day and the one at the bottom has obviously been shot at a few times

Can get pics if you like

There is a financial point missed by the cameratia lot. Install one camera for ( their figures, not mine, between £20k and £30k ) in one location, and you might just reduce the speed of vehicles in that area, but will it aid road safety. Install a lot more an the costs mount. But it's still at specific locations, which soon get noted. Spend the money on some mobile officers, and they're not just sitting in one place . And they don't just prosecute. They educate. How much money would that education save the NHS,et all ?A camera ONLY shows that at that point you were not in excess of the limit( give or take a percentage). I doesn't stop folks driving too fast for the conditions/with misted up windows/ over the limit ..............................
No ,only PC PLOD can do that . PC Gatso has no intelligence. £ for £ one PC is worth ten cameras.

Went to take a look today and the one by the roundabout is indeed looking very resplendent in its new charcoal livery. I saw a burnt out ladder in the bushes next to it so maybe the vandals have started using wood now that petrol is so expensive :)

Here's a pic. The same camera was beheaded in 2007.
