Whose responsibility is it with regard to streetlighting when it's on a county council boundary?

Streets in Salford sometimes have
Wigan-style streetlighting.

Here's an example from the Wigan-Salford boundary on Bridgwater Road, and New City Road, which gets Wigan-style street nameplates and lighting, but Google Street View lists it as "Salford".

I remember seeing a road blocked off in the middle, with the styles quite nicely contrasting - Stuart Road in Liverpool.

Anyone know what their local situation is on this?

There is often an agreement as to which authority maintain the road and its furniture, so whilst the boundary might officially run down the centreline of the street, sometimes it unofficially runs down the highway boundary.

These lights were installed when that part of Boothstown came under Wigan. The boundary now runs along the southern highway boundary of the East Lancs Road.



As mentioned in one of your other threads, it's under Wigan Council's control.

This to me is a classic example of a boundary running along a road. The left side is Walsall MBC and the right side is Birmingham. Walsall replaced their streetlights several years ago whereas Birmingham still has the S&L columns that are original to the road's construction. The Walsall side of the road has also been recently resurfaced.

The A214 Crown Lane near Streatham Common used to be 'shared' between Croydon and Lambeth - in this shot the left side of the road is in LB Croydon, with their silver-painted columns, and the right side is in LB Lambeth with theirs in black.

In the last year or two the whole road was transferred to LB Lambeth, so while the properties on the left are still in Croydon, the entire road was resurfaced by Lambeth and now has their PFI lights, painted black, on both sides. It's a bit of a shame as it's removed this little oddity.
