I started a thread on the Urbis Sapphire about these in Cheshire....but they are seem to be "reproducing" at an alarming rate all over the country.

Cheshire now has quite a few...particularly on major routes such as the A51, A556 and M53.
but here are a few places ive seen them wholesale...

Suffolk (nearly all sapphires)
Leicester and Nottingham (painted green) seem to be installing them now at an increasing rate.
Liverpool is getting a few.

Also large numbers now on...
The A500 around Stoke, M1 widened sections around Nottingham-and M1 Hertfordshire?, A12 in Suffolk/Essex, New A16 southern extension in Peterborough.
A38-Derby too?

Also its great to see those silver (ribbed type) curvy columns being used. Look quite Continental/Dutch even. :D

Anyone else noticed these lamps?

do think they look great, I am a big fan of the Sapphire.... :D

Not surprising really considering they are comparitively cost effective and dont look half bad either.

My personal favourite is the Philips SRS201-50/90 (hope I got name right), although many are being taken down now in favor of Sapphires.

they are everywhere now in Kent - most of the main road replacements are Arcs running a mix of Sodium yellow or around school zones they use a whiter cosmo lamp

Side roads is where the Sapphire dominates - mose new installations feature alcoa columns and post top Sapphire with the metallic grey canopy running cosmo yellow on the through routes and cosmo white for the cul-de-sacs and footpath lighting. When an existing lantern is replaced they always use Sapphires, although on some of the 1960's Eleco columns they do look a bit out of place

Can't speak for any other part of Kent but in the Canterbury area, the replacement of choice on major roads is the flat glass Iridium with the Arc as a second choice.

Some routes listed were HA routes it is worth noting.

Add Doncaster, Salford, Bradford and Flintshire to the list!

Northumberland and Cumbria have a few

Nottingham may be down to the PFI??

Just a quick posting....

After a visit to Oxfordshire this weekend, I would say that the Urbis Sapphire has completely taken over (and they are all painted a nice lime green too!!!) :D

Its good to see, they are a nice looking lantern. :) Smaller village versions (poled and telegraph pole armed versions) look very tidy and in keeping with the rural landscape. :D

Pity, Oxfordshire has now lost so much mercury and neighbouring Warwickshire-Theres virtually nothing left!!!

Also, a little update....
The Sapphire incidentally is now creeping onto side streets of Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston.

All hail the Sapphire!!!!

Just a quick posting....

On holiday in the Highlands and it seems that the Urbis Sapphire is invading in huge numbers.....

Alot of them also seem to be on aluminium columns also and some further north around the Bonnar Bridge area are painted green.

Look really attractive.... :D

Good to see them being installed.

I also like the Sapphire but for me my current favourite lanterns are the WTRL Arc, Urbis ZX3 (flat-glass), and Phillips MRL6.

They all look sleek and not oversized on the columns - something horrid 'trendy city' monsters like the Urbis Albany 'heritage' lanterns fail miserably at.

Sadly, many lighting engineers don't consider visual amenity a deciding factor in designing their schemes so we are now lumbered with vast numbers of unsightly unpainted steel columns that smack of cheapness.

Liverpool's look good...they have done an Oxfordshire except with the Grey to match to column colour.

Birmingham uses Sapphire 2's in White on some of its side streets....they do look a little oversized for a 5M post top column.

Speaking of Arcs on curved brackets...

A fabulous mix of new (Arcs) and old (S&L hockeysticks) in Hampstead.

I notice that Medway Council have started using the Sapphire model. The old Eleco 'Way' HW895 models have gone. The change of light the Sapphire emits takes a bit of getting used too.

Medway have all sorts of lamp posts and lights. What is the reason for replacing the Eleco's?

There are some Urbis Sapphires here in Hampshire, mainly on side roads. On the main roads and older installations on side roads, Phillips lanterns are used. Most of which are painted 'Hampshire green'.

Gateshead is now littered with them, mainly in post top form. These are mainly retrofitted onto the old columns. Couldn't believe it when I saw it!

At least they have been different and not used the drole Arc or Iridium.

I suppose seeing as the other authorities have all taken out PFIs, the borough looked like an 80's timewarp.

Oddly enough they're putting new Philips Iridiums on the new M1 Managed Motorway works around Luton rather than Sapphires which are present further south. Maybe they're being replaced as the preferred lantern even now...

Probably Medway council phasing out Mercury - mostly gone now - The Sapphire with CFL or Cosmo white replaced many of the old Eleco lanterns.

The issue I noticed is that although the output is brighter - the downwards projection of the light means that in certain areas there are noticeable dark areas between streetlight placings which weren't so bad with Eleco installations

Gateshead has installed hundreds in the last 6 months as part of their radio switching programme. Northumberland installs them in town centres as does Durham. The whole Gateshead-Newcastle western bypass is nearly all Sapphires apart from a few small stretches of Iridiums which are gradually being replaced. Strangely enough for the RF switching programme Durham use ZX2s and Thorn Oracles.
