The 2 that come to mind most easily for extending out of zone are the A47 and A38. Yarmouth is a good 90 miles from the A1, and Derby over 110 from the A4.

The A14 only goes 42 miles out of zone - there's a sign just after the A1 saying "M6 42m" along with Kettering, etc. (BTW, how normal is it to sign a motorway as a primary destination?).
As far as I can tell from my map (1997 AA European Road Atlas) the A34 only gets as far north as Oxford, about 30m from the A4. However, if you cound a 1-junction M40 multiplex it could continue as the A43, to Stamford!
The A49 looks like it extends from Shrewsbury to Preston, about 90 miles [this atlas has 30m squares!], but the A66 only looks to go 20ish miles out.
The A52 extends out beyond Derby to near Boston, about 60m.
The A46 too goes way out of zone, to Grimsby - another 90 miler.
The A59 looks like about 80m out of zone from Preston to York.
As for Scotland, the longest my atlas shows is the A832 from Inverness east to Cromarty, all of 15 miles!

<<How come the A38 and A34 tare not out of zone surely they both end in the 6-zone>>
They finish out of zone, but they start in zone (remember roads are numbered according to the furthest anti-clockwise zone they start in). Therefore the A38 starting in the South-west would give it a "3" number.
Chris.

Re A34. Oh yes, I didn't see it that far north! I just followed it up to Oxford where it disappeared. How would one measure it then? Distence from Manc to the 3-zone, or minus the missing bit? As it has a gap, surely the logical thing to do would be to renumber the northern section something from the 4 or 5 zone? As is, it seems to win win about 120miles out of zone, but take off 30 for the missing bit, making it 90ish m and handing the longest to the A38.

If roads were numbered logically what would we complain about ?
Road don't have to be continious
What we have so far is
1 -- A14 ( Jct with M1/M6)
2 -- Nothing
3 -- A34 (Manchester)
4 -- A49 (nr Preston) ot A47 (Norfolk) ?
5 -- Nothing
6 -- A66 ?

You leave my A34 alone!
Since 1967 I have lived at various times within 400 yards of it in Manchester, Birmingham and Staffordshire. It was all one when I first lived near it. By the way it always seemed very sensible to renumber the old A34 as A3400 south of Brum. It helped me keep on the right road when I used it after they first changed it.
