I was talking with some of the workers from Britain the other day and it seemed that many of them had been caught out speeding in zones that they were not aware of. And fined for it too!

In Denmark, the speed limits are not always posted on obvious signs. In smaller towns and villages, the speed limit will be 50km and nowhere is there a sign that says 50km. You will see a cityscape sign indicating the speed limit.

Please be sure to know this when driving in Denmark. The police and speed cameras are fewer than in Britain but not as obvious. No warning signs (speed cameras ahead), just a flashing light when you are caught on camera by their traffic vans.

If you want to learn more, so you do not get a huge fine (they are pretty steep here), you can read more about it at http://www.fyidenmark.com/driving_in_Denmark.html

Welcome to Sabre. Been a few years since I drove in Denmark but I found it easy, the roads well looked after and even in a blizzard well cleared. I was drving from Rodby to Helsingor and the sight of the Bridges near lollo coming out of the dark in a blizzard is one I'll never forget.

Fun clubs as well, but no matter how much Faxe D I drank I never got drunk, just needed the loo. (it was free in the club we went to!!!)

I broke down in Denmark once (fan belt). An HGV driver stopped & directed me to the nearest garage.

The garage repaired the car & told me that 'we do not charge our English friends'

Does that attitude still prevail?

Never had any problems in Denmark - always found it pleasant to visit/drive there.

One thing to watch out for in lots of continental countries though, as per the OP - the signs that announce you are entering a particular town/village also signify the start of the urban speed limit, which may not be signed separately.

I only spent a few days driving in Denmark a few years ago and on the whole enjoyed the experience... except for my first experience of the country which was driving up the German Autobahn north from Hamburg into Denmark on a particularly wet night.

There wasn't much traffic about and despite the weather I was making good time (I was trying to get to Aalborg in the north before it got too late) but as I crossed the border from Germany the previously good road markings all but disappeared and I suddenly found myself unable to see where the road ended and the verges began.

To say it was quite scary is an understatement!

In that case be careful in Portugal too... a town sign also means 50 km/h limit even if there isn't a sign there (there are village crossings in the south of the coutry that are at 70 km/h but they have a 70 speep limit signal over the town sign)

In Denmark it is important to watch out for cyclists. They generally have right of way. Often there is a cycle path running parallel with the normal road. Normally you watch only for oncoming traffic when turning left at an intersection. In this case you need to also beware of cylclists approaching on their separate crossing.
