I've looked this up - it's a disused section of racetrack, sometimes open to the public as a private toll road. What's so dangerous about it, when it is open to the public, that a major UK insurer would refuse cover?

It is still used as a racetrack. And on the days it is open to the public it is effectively a racetrack. Look up how much you will get charged for having a crash on there.

This road serves only one purpose. It is a racing circuit. For most drivers, the only reason to use this road is to test their driving ability to the limit. As there is no speed limit it is very tempting to do this.

However....

Quote:
German road traffic law applies to the whole of the Nordschleife. A driver may only drive so fast that he is always in control of his vehicle. The driver must adjust his speed according to road, traffic, visibility and weather conditions.
Nevertheless , normal driving laws do apply and you can be prosecuted for dangerous driving .....

According to A UK solicitor:

Quote:
A UK insurer must not exclude minimum level cover anywhere in an EU member state in a place where insurance is mandatory. Any clause in an insurance policy seeking to exclude mandatory cover is of no effect.

Youd never heard of the Nurburgring!!!!!! :o

Bottom line is, its a race track thats open to the public in whatever they bring, bikes, cars, buses. Major car companies also test their cars here. I know aston martin do esp.

Its issue with insureance is the same reason most cover does not include track days here in the uk, and since a dream of many petreol heads is to take their car round, some just dont have the talent to behave or stay on so...

Minimum legal levels are very low, (IIRC 3rd party death & personal injury only) so while the exclusion can not totally invalidate the insurance it may invalidate everything above the legal minimum.

Get on Youtube and search for Nurburgring fail or Nurburgring crash etc, you'll soon get the idea why insurance companies are not so keen for you to go there.

Chris.

A heck of a lot of fast cars hurtling round it, some driven by people who aren't as good at handling their car as they think they are!

Yes there are "rules" about how to conduct yourself on it, but rules aren't much use if somebody trips over you at a hundred and plenty.

Having said that, I'd love to drive the Nordschleife one day!

The Ring has always been on my 'list of stuff to do'

Been there Summer 2011.

First lap was genuine terror. Had a passenger with me. Was far too slow and in everyone else's way, making me always on the wrong line and going even slower.

2nd lap without passenger, was much faster, in others' way less of the time and f*****g awesome :D

Erm...insurance was probably invalid.

At least one of the vehicles in this big 8-vehicle accident on the Nurburgring last month appears to have a British numberplate

Can't possibly believe there is anyone in the western world who has never heard of the Nurburgring!! Apparently there is...

This is probably the most famous incident on the Nordschleife, which used to be used for F1 in those days...

Personally, I wouldn't drive it - I just don't think it's safe with the public let loose on it.

Coaches can be found going round the Ring as well.

I bet it's fun coming up behind one of those when you're shifting a bit!

I did the Nurburgring in the mid-90s in my 1.0 litre Opel Corsa, on a very windy day. I spent practically the whole lap with my eyes glued to the rear view mirror. I struggled to get above 80mph on the home straight into a strong headwind. Fortunately there was not much traffic, only a few crazy motorbikes and a handful of considerably faster production cars. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'd recommend it if you're sensible and properly insured. Despite the limitations of the car and what I thought was a reasonably conservative driving style I still managed to terrify my nervous, not-a-petrolhead passenger. Happy days :D .

Been there a number of times now, it is great fun. Even been round at over 100 in one of the Ring's people carriers with hi viz on, as a friend scraped an armco, didn't report it, then the damage to his car got spotted, so got pulled into an office, and I had to go and be translator for him - they just needed him to show him where it happened so they could confirm no damage to the infrastructure. So we got hi viz on, into a people carrier, flew round the circuit to the point, stopped and got out (whilst it's still open and people flying round), pointing to armco and bits of car etc. Then flown at high speed the rest of the way round! It was great!!!

Does the price of using the road insure you against causing damage to their infrastructure?

I don't think so - I think if you were to crash and damage the barriers you'd get a (substantial) bill.

Not at all.

Even the cost of the ambulance coming to pick you off the track costs you.

Non trivial accidents will result in a temporary close of the track, and this also costs you (something like 1000EUR per hour)

You are covered for NOTHING whilst on there, and there's lots of opportunity for them to bill you lots.

Still, all good fun :D
