Knoydart is not an island, but does have a Wiki Page: Knoydart's Roads

There is a Gallery for Canna: Gallery:Isle of Canna, but no-one has written a page yet.
I thought I wrote something about Eigg after my visit, but I can't find it anywhere :?
Raasay also has a Gallery: Gallery:Isle of Raasay

Hence, why at present, none appear on the page you highlighted. Should anyone write something, it will get added!

I have done a lot of work on the roads in Zone 8, but there is a substantial historical gap from c1960-70 (when Sabre Maps and my own collections run out) and c1990, which is about as far back as local memory seems to go. If there is anything you feel you can add, either edit the Wiki yourself, or start a thread in the Wiki forum and I'll try to incorporate it into the pages.

EDIT: fixed awful spelling error

Thanks, I know Knoydart is not an island, I lived in Mallaig (where my mother's family come from /helped found the village) for many years. My information is sketchy and general , being from approx 40 years ago . A possible source of information would be the local paper "WESTWORD" ,which features articles from various place local to Mallaig/Morar .
Canna is actually two islands, once joined by a tidal ford( I see from the WIKI site that there is now a bridge), and at one time it was the custom for fishing boats visiting to leave a memento on the "graffiti wall" just behind the harbour. .Eigg I only visited on a day basis.Rhum I did spend a few days on , but never travelled further than a mile or two on the single track road( I had no cause to go further than the local telephone exchange, and it was rutting season .Last thing you want to meet in the dark is a twelve pointer, with hinds :o  ) .Soay, I visited a few times ,but is of no interest to this site as there are no roads.
The A830,I remember travelling as a child, in the late 50's, where the Lochailort -Glenfinnan section was a single track cart track most of the way . The improvement , 50 years old was designed ( from hearsay) to be a two lane road with a design speed of 40MPH .
This section still remains, but on my last trip .it has sadly deteriorated. However from memory, it followed the line of the old road . From memory, the section at Camagael , used to round the Camagael loop( as the Blar mhor is a peat bog). Then the Blar mor section was put in ,and modified once .
Just south of Glenfinnan ,there is a very low bridge where the rail line crosses over the road. Shortly after this is a Forestry Commission road leading to Strontian( again something missing from .Not to be recommended for private cars. Not too bad quality for a van/landrover, and last time I looked ,the gate was locked
I did post up on the A861 a while ago , because from memory in the late 60's the road at Inversanda looped inland to pass by the telephone exchange and then came out on a stretch of cart track know locally as "Red Rocks"-a red shale track for about 100yds .

Looking for something else on Westword (Malaig & district paper) ,I 've come across this item regarding the history of the road. Although it's under a story of the railways, it indicates the state of the road as more like a river bed( 1901). Whether this is an early version of the A830 from the station ,or the early A861 ,which (at this time, going on the line of the road in the 60's )would have passed close to the entrance to the "Big House".The second item is interesting to me is the 1933 mention. Be intersting to know the size of the "lorries", as I can remember the same section in the late 50's not being wider than an old Ford Popular .

Is it worth keeping this as a global announcement still?

Good question! Perhaps Seven is best placed to answer. I'm happy to act on his views or failing that yourself or the other core wiki leaders.

I assume you mean me!

We're getting a few more people doing things on the Wiki, but only a few. Perhaps it's worth unstickying (is that a word?) this one, and seeing how it goes. We can always remind people in a few months if participation doesn't continue to pick up.

Oh dear! I really must pay more attention when using a phone to type on the forum. (I have now added Ritchie to it's dictionary and deleted Richie!). Don't want to delete Seven though!

OK I have unstickied it. I guess we might want to think about a refresh if we need try to reach more folks anyway!
