Aren't they worried about some boy racer flooring it and smashing right into those tables and whoever might be sitting at them?

Rhosesmor has some NSL signs within built-up areas, seemingly randomly placed in relation to the 40mph limit on the main road. I think technically the streetlights may still limit part of those streets to 30mph though - you'd expect they'd stick up some actual 30 signs to spell it out these days, though.

It actually looks as if someone has hit the NSL sign at the left.

That's just the poor GSV stitching, I think.

As the load is unlit and thus nor restricted the signs must match up with the traffic order.

The houses look kind of recent, so my guess is that the limit was extended for them (and paid for by the developer). You would think they should just have extended it past the pub - I'll bet the TRO was written from the plans by someone with little on the ground knowledge, and now it is not worth the £2,500+ to change it. Though the black and white posts would suggest a much older vintage - unless someone has used a little artistic license

Who wants to bet the order was written by the developer's consultant? Developer's traffic consultants are often at the root of bizarre things like this.

Problem is the NSL overrides street lights and given that the through road remains lit and that junction is so close to an NSL I think it would fall foul of the Adequate Guidance test in the RTRA. A good expert solicitor would give a prosecutor a seriously hard time making a case there.

more interesting than where it is is the fact that it is on a stripey post. A Gem that.

Getting up to NSL here involves taking the gates out at the same time.

Why has that been closed?

Until just before Christmas 1995 this was part of the A6091 between St Boswells and Melrose. It was closed when a new section of road was built further north to link Melrose directly to the A68. Beyond the gates the road dipped down to cross the Bogle Burn before climbing up again, and this was extremely hazardous in winter. Here is the other end of the closure.

The NSL signs are a more recent addition, erected in 2005 when a 30mph speed limit was introduced in Eildon village, but I've always been puzzled as to why they were installed so close to the gates. I can only assume it's because the road is now part of a cycle route and also because farm vehicles use the closed section to access adjacent fields.

I would still nominate these in Pierowall, Orkney as my favourites!

Brilliant - by the time you've got up to the NSL there, you're in the water.
