Could I nominate that total drag of a road, the A595, from Carlisle to Barrow as the biggest pile of pants in Britain? It has almost no dual carriageway sections, its by passes are single carriageway rubbish and the section from Workington to Sellafield is a total nightmare of 40 mph limits, traffic lights and double white lines. South of Sellafield parts of it are like a farm track. Even the fast sections north of Cockermouth are likely to have a tractor in the way or a speed camera. I have to use this road every day and it's awful.

That's the problem with single-carriageway country roads -- no passing places. The A494's like that (Ruthin - Queensferry turn).

No, the A595 has to be the worst trunk road in Britain. It's 80 miles of hell. The section south of Cockermouth is atrocious. It's going to be even more fun now there are temporary traffic lights at Whitehaven, this will mean 15 minute delays during the rush hour.

Ach, the A7, the only single digit trunk road to be almost totally single carriageway and which has barely changed in the last fifty years. Again this not very good road originates in Cumbria, home of the A595, A596 and A591, three dreadful roads.

Apart from the section north of Dalkeith, which was rerouted over the northern end of the A68 when the Dalkeith bypass opened in 1991.... ;)

The A7 does not start in Carlisle, it starts in Edinburgh, as all Ax start in either London or Edinburgh.

The A591 though has an excuse, running as it does through the Lake District National Park...
