A6144(M) - End Game

Post by VibeOne »

Yup another thread about it - there are others but I didn't know which was most appropriate. Please feel free to merge if thats best.

Right, went along it yesterday.

Good news is that its still a motorway..... just.

There are covered over clearway signs (and I'm guessing 50 MPH signs - even though thats not finalised yet).

What annoys me, is that the motorway SOS boxes are covered over and presumnably about to be removed, since it won't be a motorway anymore. How stupid is that? If they are there already, surely it makes perfect sense to leave them?!

Normal junction layout signs are hidden behind the motorway ones too. I'll upload some final A6144(M) photos shortly.

Please do upload these.

As for the SOS boxes, the ones on the ex-A41(M) were never removed, but I suspect they may have been decommissioned.

The ones on the A6144(M) have been bagged over since at least early 2004, for what it's worth.

The ones on the A102(M) are still in existence too. I don't know about Westway/M41 without looking...

I suspect the Westway ones are still there.

So, will there be a "NO" sign on the A6144 spur in the future? Looks like I'll have to borrow the car to get a photo

Personally I would have just left them as they are doing no harm and may come in useful in the future if anyone is unfortunate enough to break down along there. Them being covered up is not a good sign.

I hope it's not made into a 50mph limit (no doubt gatsos would soon follow if that was to be the case). It should be NSL.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

Agreed, but I'm afraid it is going to be a 50 :@

Pointless replacement of signage, although it does show up how massively oversized the original motorway standard was!Image

You can just see the legs of the new sign behind it.Image

Excellent pictures - shame you can't see the new direction sign behind the blue one - I suspect it states the exact same information though.

Thanks. As far as I could tell, it did say the same information (from looking backwards while driving the other way!!)

So the 50mph limit has already been decided even though the deadline for objections has just passed and I received a reply after placing my objection saying I will be notified of the outcome in due course - so much for democracy :?

You say 'pointless' replacement of the River Mersey sign, but in fairness, the old sign is looking a bit dirty and tatty.

The A6144(M) should have its own in depth page in the Histories section of CBRD when it gets downgraded IMO.

Its just that unique.

Dirty - yes , tatty - I'd bet not. It looks like it just needs a wipe to me. Though no one can get close to it because its a motorway :P

and I presume the covered signs are the usual clearway/50 limit on the same signs jobby. I can't guarantee it, but I suspect they say 50MPH despite it not being confirmed.

Can we cause a fuss about this?

I don't think blue borders are allowed for river signs now, so it will be a replacement for that reason, probably.

I went past there on Sunday, specifically to take a look at the road, and it was closed! :(

I thought it was the downgrading already taking place - ie it wouldn't be motorway when re-opened. The gantries for the M60 turn off said "A6144" without the (M) suffix as well.

I suspect when the covers are taken off some will show 50mph limit and some will show the usual :gatso: signage.

I guess we won't know for sure until the covers are finally removed from the signs, but I will be very surprised if they are to reveal NSL. Unfortunately as discussed recently, the NSL seems to be slowly eroding away on many roads which is why I don't think any of us will be surprised if the A6144(M) has been lowered to 50mph. I'd love to see the excuses, sorry, 'reasoning' behind it if this is to be the case.

One thing is for sure though - I think we will all miss it's motorway status once it's finally removed.

They might still be permitted, IIRC anything bar red is OK but that might be for village nameplates only....

just checked - diag 2403.1 . Could've stayed there if it was in better nick...

The blue borders are still OK but they are not allowed to be installed on new signs. So a sign with a blue border is OK to keep until it needs replacing then it must be replaced by a black bordered one.
C, E flat and G go into a bar. The barman says "sorry, we don't serve minors". So E flat walks off, leaving C and G to share an open fifth between them.

I know that holds for destination signs, but aren't rivers the same as County boundary signs, where at the moment it looks like anything goes?
