Most Words in a Road Name

Post by M60-Tony »

Driving through Ripponden today, noticed Bank Hey Bottom Lane. It struck me as fairly unusual for a road name to have 4 words in it. Though there is also Well I Hole Road, Greenfield, near Oldham, whic h is also 4 words (sort of)

It made me wonder if there are (m)any 5-or-more-word road names?

Hmm.... does the 7-word"Brynglas Tunnels And Malpas Road Relief Road" north of Newport count, then? :) (just a shame that it's only in my Cardiff A-Z from 1998!)

At the other end of the scale, can I vote for 6G Road in Llandudno
Junction? I doubt there's a shorter one anywhere.

Well, there's "The Street" in Chipperfield (and probably lots of other places too...) But not quite as short as your example, no....

There's A B Row in Birmingham City Centre, think it's still intact after the Masshouse redevelopment.

Another 5-word name is Bristol's There And Back Again Lane.
If MS Autoroute 2002 is to believed, there are three instances of the same seven word road name in the country - Channel Tunnel/Tunnel Sous la Manche Rd

this screenshot
is of the one in Clevedon, North Somerset, but the name also 'exists'
in Crosby, Liverpool and just outside the village of Sunk Island
south-east of Hull (directly over the Humber from Grimsby).

One street in Cambridge near to the Grafton shopping centre is apparently called "Adam and Eve Street"

And there is at least one more in Cambridge - "Little St. Mary's Road"
A Manchester example - "Sir Matt Busby Way"

Would "Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route", not actually a street name, but the name shown on roadside signs, count?

Over in Normandy, there's The British Sharpshooter Regiment Street, named so because in 1944 the aforementioned regiment used it.
I wonder if there's a Llanfair PG Road? If it isn't abbreiviated it will be longer than any 5 word street name ;-)

York has a 'Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate'. The street itself is about 20 yards long, so the nameplate is longer than the street!

I have a better one - the A406 from Barking up to Redbridge Roundabout was
known in its projected and under-construction days in the London A-Z as
(deep breath) "The South Woodford to Barking Relief Road"!

Maybe not many words in this example but still a mouthful-

The Northern Development Route = the name for the proposed Western Bypass
of Carlisle due to start being constructed 2005

And according to the "Phillips Street Atlas of Cumbria" there is a street
in Whitehaven called Ginns to Kells Road which does exactly that go from Ginns
on the B5345 to area of Whitehaven known as Kells

Also in Whitehaven the town centre bypass (A595) is imaginatively named
Loop Road North and Loop Road South

But one of the strangest names in the Cumbria Street Atlas is on the A684
between M6 J37 and Kirkby Lonsdale part of this road is apparently named Scotch

I meant between M6 J37 and Sedbergh not Kirkby Lonsdale

Searching in Welsh-language road names may find you a many-worded street - there is a Parc-Y-Ty-Glas in Cardiff and Heol Y Garreg Wen down the road from me, among probably many other examples.

But King George V Drive North looks quite genuine.

A couple of four-decker ones from Edinburgh:
Sir Harry Lauder Road (the Portobello bypass)
and Drum Brae Park Approach, in the west of the city.
And the full title of the city bypass (or at least it was when first built)is a five-decker name: The City of Edinburgh By-pass.
