I've not posted much in a while either. Warrington council have surprisingly removed these oldies at this junction in one hit a few weeks ago. It's been a long time coming. But i'm sad to see them go

It was worthwhile taking photographs of them when you did, Rambo, as they are kept recorded both on here and however you have them stored.

Although, looking unemotionally at these manky signs, replacing them is the correct course of action it is a shame when they do disappear. I can't imagine the new versions ageing the same way and being viewed with the same fondness.

Those signs predated Birchwood Way were so also massively out of date which is what made their survival even better.

Warrington used to have some ancient signs everywhere - most gone now, there used to be a giant one on the A49 before the A50 junction was rebuilt about 20 years ago.

Spot on Kevin. Although i don't think these signs will be replaced at all. It will be a 'signless' junction i guess :D

And there are still plenty of old ones littered around but for some reason Warrington don't seem to be in any hurry to remove or replace them. Speaking of Birchwood way. There are still 2/3 originals from the opening at the western end dating from the 70's.
I never managed to capture the ones on the A49 you refer to but have seen the photo's on Sabre. Lovely stuff :D

I was approaching this sign and was wondering what the blanked off item was

https://www.google.com/maps/@54.7059153 ... ?entry=ttu

It isn't blanked off, it's a previously-brown leisure destination for a council run 9 hole golf course and art gallery.

The roundabout finger sign also badly faded https://www.google.com/maps/@54.7048643 ... ?entry=ttu

Most of the signs on that stretch of the A8 are faded, including most of the yellow numbers and red parts of the clearway signs. They presumably date to when that section was dualled and whatever company made the signs used a material that was prone to fading.

Even the advance sign approaching the bridge looks like its rusting or something

Came across this well-faded shield at the eastern end of CR 4 in Russell County, AL, while checking out/up on the abandoned defect detectors on the NS O Line and the SCL Americus Subdivision yesterday:

There were plenty of other worn-out looking county route shields further west, including several that were in a similar condition to the above, though I didn't snag any photos of them.
Probably busy documenting grade crossings in the southeastern United States.

I was looking for something else but this looks like another old sign which could be A1 patched over? (Surviving as of June 2023)

Apparently the A46 runs from Kidderminster to Leominster and the A44 from Kidderminster to Telford!

Yes, there were several of these for a long time, most have since gone.

For a moment there, I thought you were going to show this one:

which has now been replaced.
