Nominations for Photo of the Month for August 2012 are now closed.

The photo which wins the contest will be displayed in full on the SABRE index page and cropped to fit the "banner" in the top right for the duration of the month.

The only rule is that the photo, and any subsequent work, must be entirely your own. Photos where this is evidently not the case will not be accepted for voting.

Only one entry per person will be accepted.

If you think another member's photo is suitable then please encourage them to enter it.

To enter a photo, then please use this link to add it to the gallery. Make sure that the gallery is still ticked before submitting it.

You can view the current gallery contents here.

If you need any help adding one of your photos, please ask in this thread.

To allow sufficient time to upload and vote for photos in time for me to edit the site, nominations will close on 26th July, at around 3pm. The poll will be created shortly afterwards. Voting will then be open until 2nd August, after the poll has closed the photo will appear on the site within a few days.
The delay is because I'm on holiday, and won't have access to ftp/photoshop.

I've just uploaded a file but when changing the file name I forgot to put .jpg at the end so when using Internet Explorer the full size image shows up as a scrambled text file. I've tried to edit the file but the filename field can't be changed. Is there any other way of correcting it?

To rename you use "move".

Oddly the wiki refused to rename to .jpg but .jpeg worked!

Since the tide has turned away from the humble Scottish bridge, I've tried something a little different.

Double post... the same has happened to my photo as happened to Truvelo's - where is this 'move' function?

A bridge from me. This section is wholly English, taken from England and looking towards England...

For some reason files can't be moved except by users with admin rights.
I've ever uploaded a file with an incorrect name it is easier to add the delete tag and upload it again.

Could some nice admin person please update my photo because I'm a bit lost here?

Perhaps the wiki can be modified so it automatically adds the .jpg extension if none is provided.

Devil's Advocate: What if you upload a GIF with no extension?

How about the uploader checking that there is an extension and reminding the user if it is missing?

Just noticed after uploading the signpost picture that there is another picture of Exmoor close to this signpost on this forum (Valley of the Rocks), obviously a popular area!

For my site I used Javascript to provide the opposite: whether the title is generated automatically (from the source file name) or you type it in, it immediately removes the extension, and when the form is submitted it remembers what extension was used and puts it back on.

It's hardly technically impressive, but it's functional.

I have offered to look at SABRE's upload form but I can only offer what I've achieved before.

Unix has the "file" command which can examine the header of a file to work out what format it's in. It ought to be possible to use that (within the upload logic) to fix files that don't have a correct extension.

Older (broken) versions of IE ignore the file type header in HTML responses and decide what to do with the content based on something similar.

Code:
$ file -b --mime-type /home/pm/Image043.jpg
image/jpeg
$ file -b --mime-type /home/pm/xine_snapshot-9.png
image/png
$ file -b --mime-type /home/pm/comics/dilbert-24-06-1995.gif
image/gif
$ file -b --mime-type /usr/share/turboprint/img/magenta.tiff
image/tiff
$ file -b --mime-type /home/pm/doc/m6-anniversary.pdf
application/pdf
$ file -b --mime-type /usr/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon-48x48.bmp
image/x-ms-bmp
$ file -b --mime-type /home/pm/video/BBC56_startup.mov
video/quicktime

Well, I was contemplating a Severn Bridge pic, but as Paul has done a riverbank shot, I thought I'd go for an on-deck pic taken from the Wye bridge.

Yes, the last time I uploaded that photo onto a thread, it attracted a few fans so I decided to submit (or re-submit) it onto POTM, despite it being taken over four years ago.
