Old A27 1 - C7 Sign249 viewsThe Old A27 At Beddingham
In the 1970s, around the time the Lewes bypass was built, the A27 at Beddingham was straightened. The old route is still a "highway", although it's "access only". Here are some pictures of this road abandoned for almost 30 years.

Look! It's a C road on a sign! And it's even my user name! Bonus!

Checkpoint.jpg
Old A27 2 - Checkpoint167 viewsThe turning on the right leads to the new A27. It is a layby beyond here, up until the roundabout. I think the layby entrance may be an old field entrance, as it almost matches a new entrance on the other side of the new road. The concrete building is a police/DoT checkpoint/weigh bridge.

Eastern-End-Gate.jpg
Old A27 3 - Eastern End Gate176 viewsThis is the eastern end of the old route. The signs say you aren't allowed down there, and there is now a padlocked gate, as it was a handy queue jumping rat run, because of the long jams in this area because of the level crossing up the road.

Old A27 4 - Just Round Bend140 viewsThis is the view just past the bend, to the west. The bend is one of the reasons the "mini bypass" was built

Old A27 5 - Looking east149 viewsThis is not the same gate. There are three of these along the road now. This one is about 200m past the first one we saw in the other picture. So there is no access to this part of the road.

M2 5 - Towards A278 Junction674 viewsAbout 1 1/2 mile from J4 where the improvement ends and the M2 drops from 3 to 2 lanes. The original bridges have been left at this juction. Again the lane drop markings start 1 mile from the exit, another waste of space. This section has a huge central reservation. Not sure if its a rare example of forward planning! Could easily be widened to 4 lanes each way. Note the e/b c'way following the old course of M2 with mature trees to the left. W/B carriageway on a new alignment to the south has nothing yetM4Simon (wikified)
Near-Roundabout.jpg
Old A27 7 - Near Roundabout153 viewsThis is part of the layby. There are two entrances at this end. One to the A27 (right) and one to the A26 (ahead). Roundabout is just visible and the queue is probably partly for the level crossing, 500 yards from the roundabout on the A27. Not sure of the original route here, as the roundabout is early 1990's.

Old A27 - 10 -186 viewsThis roundabout is the link between West End High Street and West End Road. This was part of the original route of the A27 (and before that, the Romsey - Chilworth - Botley turnpike), but has long since been renumbered. Nontheless, some old signs still remain.

Old A27 - 12185 viewsAnd further down the road, another old sign, this time with the headstock complete. The right hand sign looks newer than the left hand one

A27 Beddingham Camera319 viewsYou can make out the skid marks from someone who must have nearly went through on amber or flashing red and anchored for the camera.
