Twyford Cutting230 viewsIn the depths of the chalk, where the sun never shines and demons lurk! Not really. Traffic diverted onto this July 1994, opened fully Dec 1994.SteveA30

M3389 viewsSome bods in a works Transit decide it would be fun to race the s/bnd traffic.....on the n/bnd side! Presumably, they knew it wasn't opening just yet, otherwise, they were in for a shock.SteveA30

M3 August 2004, looking west.419 viewsTwo unconnected accidents between J4 & 5 one way and 4a & 5 the other, created this spooky view, taken from the B3013. Fleet MSA is in the distance. This is the exact spot from which I observed the traffic on opening day in June 1971, after cycling furiously from school in Fleet at lunch break, hoping to get the first traffic. Too late, it was already fully open. Should have skived off! I continued to the A30 in 2004, where I expected to and did find, chaos. It was a Friday in August after all.SteveA30

M3 demolition310 viewsThe Hatch Farm bridge being chipped away, about 5am. It didn't look as if they would be finished by 8am and, they weren't. 8.45 in fact. Still, not far out. Looking west. The orange areas are sparks from the cutters.SteveA30

M3 Chilworth296 viewsAn early Sunday morning, looking towards the southern terminus of the M3, where the A33 takes over. As can be seen, the motorway here is just D2; a reminder of the old days when it was the A33. Also note the white sign, which is actually on the motorway.sotonsteve

M3, Compton.374 viewsLooking south. This is where the on line section ends. The A33 veered to my right through the cutting. The bridge I'm on is roughly where the A31 used to be, leaving the A33 at a GSJ on its way to Romsey. The original A33 also carried on via Otterbourne until 1967, when the D2 to Southampton opened. Oct 12 1997, just over 2 years after M3 completion.SteveA30

M3490 viewsLooking north from the same bridge. The A33 went behind the house, across the M3, under the bridge and sharp left back towards the M3. The filled in treeless cutting beyond the Hockley lights, can be seen in the distance, to the left of Twyford Down cutting on the M3. Amazing how they managed to do all this and keep 4 lanes of traffic flowing as well.SteveA30
