Craibstone Junction is a junction at the entrance to Aberdeen Airport which consists of two distinct parts to connect the A90 and A96. The whole junction complex was constructed as part of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route project, which included the new road into the Airport, now numbered as the B984. For some reason, it was decided that the A90 and A96 would not be directly connected, so instead there is a Diamond interchange on the A90, with a short dual carriageway curving round to meet the A96 at the new Craibstone Roundabout. The roundabout also provides access to the airport, and was opened well in advance of the completion of the AWPR.

A90 Junction

The Diamond Junction on the A90 passes below the dual carriageway, and provides full access via two fully signalised crossroads. To the west of the A90, the dual carriageway continues as D1 for a short distance before losing the central reservation as it approaches a T junction with a local road. This is now the only connection for the various properties cut off by the new A90 in this area. Back at the junction, as most traffic is passing between the A90 and A96, the slip roads are designed to accommodate this flow. Furthermore, most traffic is using the A90 south rather than north, so again, these sliproads are designed for this. As such, the two south facing sliproads are 2 lanes throughout, with staggered entry / exit to the A90 mainline, while the north facing slips are single lane, the offslip widens to two lanes for the traffic lights.

The dual carriageway link is rather bizzarely signed as being the (A90) from the roundabout and the (A96) from the A90 slips, with white signs used at the A90 junction. This all suggests that it is, in fact, unclassified, and perhaps forms part of the C89C minor route, a detached part of which is connected to the western end of the dual carriageway link, to the west of the A90 sliproads.

Craibstone Roundabout

The roundabout on the A96 is a large 4 arm junction with every approach dualled. It was built in advance of the AWPR to provide better connection into the airport site as well as connecting the A96 to the new A90. Apart form the Airport road, which was numbered as the B984 in a council review in 2020, all of the approaches gain a third lane for turning traffic as they approach the roundabout. There are then three spiralled circulatory lanes, with each arm controlled by traffic lights. Construction of the roundabout started in 2015 and was completed in 2016.

The A96 previously passed straight through the middle of the roundabout island on a long sweeping curve. However, it has been completely removed from the area, and a burn has been diverted through the middle of the island, passing under the south west and north east corners of the junction.
