The A167(M) is the Newcastle Central Motorway. It is the only part of the Tyneside urban motorway network to be constructed as planned.
Following the opening of this section of motorway, residents launched the 'Send The Lorries Out of Gosforth and Gateshead' campaign in 1976.

The Central Motorway opened in 1975 with the number A1(M). It was renumbered A6127(M) in 1977 when the A1 was rerouted via the Tyne Tunnel and has held the A167(M) number since 1990.
