For the current A4051 through Cwmbrân, parallel to the A4042, see A4051.
The original route of the A4051 was a west/south link road in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil.
It started on the then-A465 Bethesda Street before heading south along Dynevor Street. The southern end of that road no longer exists, having been taken over by Merthyr Tydfil College - and this sets the scene for the remainder of the ex-A4051.
The road crossed the River Taff directly west of Castle Street; this bridge was narrow with a pronounced arch and was later replaced by a wider bridge alongside but both bridges have now been removed. The road then crossed the grassed area south of Castle Street along more-or-less the same route as the present footpath to reach Victoria Street. It followed this road, which is now largely pedestrianised, to end on the High Street, which was originally the A470.
The A4051 is now unclassified and (as stated above) partly demolished, allowing the number to be used elsewhere.
