For the North Orbital Road, near Watford and St Albans, Hertfordshire, see A405.
The A405 originally ran from Gunnersbury Park to Wembley in West London. It was a rare case of a 3 digit road starting on a 4 digit road. This was due to the A4000 being A307 in draft lists.
Starting on the A4000 opposite Gunnersbury Park, the A405 headed north along Gunnersbury Avenue. It crossed the A40 (now A4020) Uxbridge Road before continuing along Hanger Lane into Alperton.
As originally classified, the A405 bore right at Alperton to end on the A404 in Wembley. However, the road was soon rerouted to join that road further west in Sudbury Town, with the old road into Wembley becoming the A4089.
When the A406 North Circular Road was inaugurated it took over the A405 from Gunnersbury Park to Hanger Lane; the road north to Sudbury Town became the A4005.
