One of those relatively short urban A-roads, the A5009 provides a link from the A52 to the A53 avoiding Stoke-on-Trent city centre. It is non-primary throughout. For most of its route, it is helpfully called Leek Road.
The road starts at a crossroads, where it also meets the A52 and A5008. It heads north and soon veers right to pass under a low railway bridge. Tall vehicles have already been directed to take a different route. The railway itself used to be the line from Stoke to Leek but is now disused, although plans exist to bring it back into operation.
The A5009 passes through Abbey Hulton, home of Hulton Abbey, goes past Carmountside Crematorium and through Milton. It ends at a T-junction with the A53.
