The A5142 was allocated to Great Northern Road and Station Road (passing the long-gone Dunstable Town station) in Dunstable, which allowed traffic to cut the corner between the A5 and the A505.
The A5142 number was short-lived. The road was unclassified until it gained the number in the 1970s and then the road was declassified again in the 1990s. It is now traffic-calmed.
