The A566 is a short but busy two-mile-long road linking the A565 at the Bootle Docks with the A59 road to Preston.
The road begins as Knowsley Road opposite Gladstone Dock. It runs east through terraced housing and industrial sprawl. In the process it goes under the Liverpool to Southport railway line and over the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, with a few roundabouts thrown in for good measure. By Orrell library an unclassified D2 road bears left past the cemetery, cutting off the corner with the A5038.
After passing Orrell Park railway station (on the Ormskirk branch line) the A566 TOTSOs right at traffic lights to go over the railway line on a very narrow arch bridge before descending to end at a signalised T-junction on the A59.
