The A6055 was originally allocated to what was the northern end of Derby Street in Bolton, providing a link between the A579, which continued south along Derby Street and the A58 (current A676) Deane Road
Today, the specific route of the road has been comprehensively altered by the construction of the University of Bolton and the Inner Ring Road which has taken all its traffic. For a time most of the ex-A6055 remained as College Close and a line across a car park but this was swept away in a redevelopment in the 2010s and the Bolton One building has been built on top of the road.
