The A916 is a relatively short A-road in Fife, which starts off on the A914 (former A92) at the southern edge of Cupar. The junction is a sharp fork with the A916 immediately climbing up the steep flank of the Hill of Tarvit, running roughly parallel to the A914 below. Still climbing, it curves to the south east and passes between fields and patches of woodland, offering a fine vantage point across Fife to the west. The summit is reached at the entrance drive to the historic house of Hill of Tarvit, and then the road dips a little to reach the small village of Craigrothie. At the far end of the village, the B939 approaches from Ceres to the east, and the A916 continues south across farmland, undulating as it passes scattered roadside farms and cottages.
The 170m contour is crossed more than once near Pratis Farm Park, before the road starts its long gentle descent, heading south west again past the junction with the B927. The Back Burn is crossed at Toddy Bridge, before a slight climb into Bonnybank, an outlying part of Kennoway which lies a little further south. This is the end of the rural section of the route, and the road now winds through the town on Cupar Road then New Road, dipping a little to cross the burn that marks the boundary between Kennoway and Windygates. Now following Kennoway Road, the A916 continues south to a set of traffic lights in the centre of town. Originally the road ended here but with the coming of the A911 bypass the route was extended between 1988 and 1993 and now TOTSOs left to run along a short section of that road's pre-bypass route to end on the new road at a roundabout, where the A911 also ends.
